At your first lesson, your instructor will conduct an eye exam and check that the details of your provisional licence are correct, confirming you are legally allowed to attend the lessons, bring glasses with you if necessary. Your instructor will then take you to a nearby safe, appropriate place in the Sutton, Wallington or Morden areas, where your lessons will start. The first lesson will include cockpit exercises, where we will ensure that your seat position allows you to comfortably reach and use the pedal controls and steering wheel, discussing seatbelt laws, and your responsibility towards any passengers. Your instructor will have you adjust your mirrors to an appropriate position to enable you to observe effectively, and will discuss using the mirrors and blind spots.
Then we will cover foot controls, right-to-left, acceleration, brake, clutch (ABC) and explain what pedals do, which feet you use on each pedal, when you will be using each, and our teaching terminology. We will then talk about the gears, steering, handbrake, gauges, and instrument panel of your car, then your instructor will talk about your Dual Controls and when they can be used, our best Dual Control is our verbal instructions. Before driving you in your own vehicle, we will provide a briefing of moving away from traffic using your cars controls, effectively watching your surroundings, and if needed, giving signals, moving your vehicle to a proper position on the road, and then finding an appropriate position for pulling over on your left. Once you have found a suitable location on the LEFF, then we will walk you through maneuvering the car with effective observations, signals if needed, to pull the vehicle reasonably close to the kerb. Once your instructor has completed his/her orientation, it is time for you to take control of the vehicle.
