Different Types of Pedestrian Crossings

Pedestrian crossings

As a responsible driver, understanding and respecting pedestrian crossings is crucial for passing your driving test. Pedestrian crossings come in various forms in the UK, each designed to facilitate safe passage for pedestrians while ensuring smooth traffic flow. At DTC Driving School, we believe that knowing the distinctions between these crossings is essential for all drivers, especially those seeking to pass their theory test or last-minute driving tests or requiring an emergency driving instructor.

Let’s delve into the diverse types of pedestrian crossings you’ll encounter on UK roads:

Zebra Crossings

The Zebras feature has its famous distinctive black and white stripes. They give pedestrians priority by law when they step onto the crossing. Drivers must stop and give way to pedestrians waiting or crossing. These crossings indicate a designated area where pedestrians have the right of way once they step onto the crossing. However, there’s a distinction between a single Zebra Crossing and one divided by a central reservation.

A single Zebra Crossing is one without any physical barrier. When approaching a single Zebra Crossing, drivers must be prepared to stop if pedestrians are waiting or are already on the crossing. Drivers should allow pedestrians to safely reach the other side before proceeding, remaining cautious even if pedestrians have crossed partially.

However, a Zebra Crossing which is divided by a central reservation has two separate sections. You should treat each section as a separate crossing. So once a pedestrian as crossed your side of the road and has reached the central reservation, you may, as a driver, proceed.

Pelican Crossings

Pelican crossings, or in other words, Pedestrian Light Controlled Crossings, operate by the pedestrian pressing a button on the yellow box. The light will stay red for about 6 to 8 seconds, allowing just enough time for a pedestrian to cross the road. However, after red, they have a flashing amber signal, allowing pedestrians to finish crossing if it’s safe. You, as a driver, must wait at the flashing amber signal until the pedestrian has fully crossed the road.

Puffin Crossings

Puffin crossings, or in other words, Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent crossings, are operated similarly to a pelican crossing by the pedestrian. However, after the red light, there is no flashing amber. Instead, there are sensors that detect the pedestrian presence, adjusting the signal timings accordingly. The red signal will remain red until the pedestrian is fully off the road. Unlike traditional crossings, puffins feature pedestrian lights on the same side as the pedestrian, making it easier for them to see and follow signals. DTC Driving school has a YouTube video on the Puffin crossing. Why not consider watching it!

Toucan Crossings

The Toucan crossing is named after the phrase “two can,” toucan crossings are designed for both pedestrians and cyclists. These crossings are wider than typical pedestrian crossings and feature separate signal phases for pedestrians and cyclists, allowing both to cross simultaneously. The Toucan crossing can come in the form of a puffin crossing with sensors, or a pelican crossing with a flashing amber signal.

Pegasus Crossings

Pegasus crossings cater to pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders. They have two push-button controls, one lower down for pedestrians and cyclists and the other high up for horse riders. They have separate signal phases for pedestrians and riders, ensuring safe passage for all users.

At DTC Driving School, we emphasise the significance of respecting pedestrian crossings, not only for passing the driving test but also for safe everyday driving.
