Can You Use Your Own Car for Driving Test?

Many driving test centres in the UK have a high waiting time for test appointments. However, the driving test cancellations do appear but do so at extremely very short notice. Many learner drivers book these tests at short notice without pre-arranging a car for the test. They automatically assume that their driving instructor will be available to take them. So, if your driving instructor is double booked, can you take your own car to the driving test? In short, the answer is yes. However, there are a few things that the test candidate needs to take into consideration.

Is the Driving Test Car Roadworthy?

One of the things that you must ask yourself before deciding to take your own vehicle is if your vehicle is roadworthy. The car that you bring to the driving test must be taxed, MOTed and insured for the learner driver. If you have normal driving insurance, you should check with the insurance company that there will allow for the car to be used in the driving test. If you have learner driver insurance, using the car for the driving test will not be a problem. However, you must bear in mind, that once the driving examiner has issued a post if you get, the learner driver insurance will no longer be valid.

Furthermore, the car that you used for the driving test must be fitted with L-plates both at the front and back. The car should also be fitted with an extra rear-view mirror for use of the driving examiner. Before starting the driving test, the examiner will inspect the vehicle. Particular attention may be paid to the tyres, lights, horn, wipers, demisters and the heating system. You may also be required to open the bonnet and asked about the engine coolant level, engine oil level or the windscreen washer fluid level.

Are you Comfortable?

Some learner drivers have access to their instructor’s car as well as their own car, they will need to decide which vehicle to take to the driving test. If you have had plenty of practice in your own car and feel more comfortable and are more familiar with your own vehicle, it may make sense to use your car for the driving test. However, if you’re more familiar with your driving instructor’s car, then it would make more sense to take the instructors car.

It may be cheaper to take your own car to the driving test. However, the driving instructor will be able to rectify any bad habits you may have developed in the meantime. The pretest warm-up is most important.

Using a Friends/Family Members Car

If you do not have access to your own car, you may borrow a vehicle from a friend or a family member. However, you will not be able to use a rental vehicle for the driving test unless it is fitted with dual controls. Any car that you use for the driving test must be insured for the learner and for the purpose of the driving test. You can normally buy learner driver insurance to cover you on a friends or family member’s vehicle. Even if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident in their vehicle, it will not affect the any no claims bonus. This is because you will be cleaning on your own learner driver insurance.
