Can You use the Examiners Car?

Learner drivers, especially at the London driving test centres, turn up for the driving test hoping to do a driving test but without a car. London, being a large multicultural society, has a large number of people who hold foreign and international driving licences. These drivers are sometimes under the impression that the driving examiners will allow the use of their car to the test candidates. This is usually the case in many countries. However, in the UK the DVSA or the driving examiners will not permit a driving test candidate to allow the use of their vehicles.

DVSA Email Confirmation

The DVSA booking email confirmation is sent out to all driving test candidates at the time of booking. This email clearly states that the candidate must bring their UK driving licence and a car to their driving test. It further states that many people use their instructor’s cars.

Driving Examiner or Driving Instructor

A large number of driving test candidates often get confused with the driving examiner and the driving instructor. They, therefore, assume that they can use the examiner’s car. A driving examiner is a person employed by the government whose job is to test your driving ability and decide whether your driving is safe enough to be issued with a full driving licence or not. The learner driver is strictly not allowed to use the examiner’s car.

The driving instructor, on the other hand, is often a self-employed person whose job is to teach you to drive. Driving instructors are basically teachers. Driving instructors in the UK must be registered with the DVSA in order to take payment for driving lessons. It is against the law for anyone to take payment for driving lessons unless they are registered with the DVSA.

Most Learners Use Instructor Car for Test

The majority of learner drivers would prefer to use the driving instructor’s car for the driving test. Driving instructors will hire out their cars to their pupils that they have taught. If you have booked a driving test and are looking for a driving instructor to take you to the test, you should not have any problems provided that you are willing to take a few driving lessons. In order for the driving instructor to allow you to use their car for the test, you will usually have to provide them with about one months’ notice and be prepared to take at least 8 to 10 driving lessons.

There is also the option of hiring a dual controlled car from DTC UK. We have emergency driving instructors throughout the London area who are familiar with all the driving test routes used by the driving examiners. Our emergency driving instructors will provide you a few hours of intensive training to ensure that you stand a good chance of passing your driving test.
