Manchester is a city in Greater Manchester, England, and had a population of 547,627 as of 2018. It is bordered by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east, and neighbouring city of Salford to the west. The two cities, together with surrounding towns, make up one of the United Kingdoms most densely populated conurbations. Manchesters history begins with a civilised settlement associated with the Roman fort (castra) at Mamucium, or Mancunium, established around AD 79 on a sandstone bluff close to the confluence of the Rivers Medlock and Irwell. Historically part of Lancashire, areas of Cheshire south of the River Mersey were annexed to Manchester during the 20th century, including Wythenshawe in 1931.
Throughout the medieval period, Manchester had remained a borough, but began expanding “at an incredible pace” about the beginning of the 19th century. Manchesters urbanisation, which had not been planned, was brought about by a surge in the production of textiles during the Industrial Revolution, resulting in it becoming the first industrialised city in the world. Manchester achieved townhood status in 1853. The Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, creating Manchester Docks and connecting the city with the Irish Sea, 36 miles (58 km) west. Its fortunes declined following the Second World War, due to deindustrialisation, but an IRA bombing in 1996 led to widespread investment and regeneration.
Following the successful post-IRA bombing regeneration, Manchester was host to the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The city is noted for its architecture, culture, music exports, media links, science and engineering production, social influence, sports clubs, and transport links. Manchester Liverpool Road railway station was the first intercity passenger rail station in the world. At Manchester University, Ernest Rutherford first separated atoms in 1917, Frederic K. Williams, Tom Kilburn, and Geoff Tootill developed the worlds first stored-program computer in 1948, and Andrei Giim and Konstantin Novoselov isolated the first graphene in 2004.
