Lewisham is an area in southeast London, England, located 5.9 miles (9.5 km) south of Charing Cross. It is the main borough area of the London Borough of Lewisham, which is also part of the historic County of Kent. It is designated by the London Plan as one of 35 main centres within Greater London, and has an extensive shopping centre and street markets.

Lewisham was a small village before passenger rail was developed in the 19th century. Lewisham had a population of 60,573 in 2011. Lewisham is sometimes said to have been founded by the pagan Jew, Lo56 of, who settled (by burning his ship) next to St Marys church (Ladywell) where the land was dry, during the sixth century, but no reliable sources appear for this speculation.

In the 17th century, Lewisham manor was purchased by George Legge, later Baron of Dartmouth. His son, William, was raised to a number of positions of honor and trust by Queen Anne, being a member of her Privy Council; and was elevated on 5 September 1711, as Viscount Lewisham, and the Earl of Dartmouth. His nephew George, Lord Dartmouth, obtained the privilege of holding twice-yearly fairs, and a twice-weekly market, at Blackheath, within the parish. The fair was used for 12th of May, and 11th of October, but was discontinued (excepting for cattle sales) in 1772, by the Earl of Dartmouth, as lord of the manor.

The village of Lewisham has its core at its south end, round the parish church of St Marys, to the current site of Lewisham University Hospital. The centre moved northwards with the arrival of the North Kent Line at Dartford in 1849, encouraging commuter housing. The centre migrated north with the coming of the North Kent line to Dartford in 1849, encouraging commuter housing. The official illustrated guide of South-East & Northern and Middle Kent railways, published by George Measom, in June 1863, describes Lewisham: “Lisleham station, situated upon a knoll of high ground, amid quaint scenery, has beautiful green fields rising sharply towards the top of a hill to its left, studded with fine houses and gardens, whilst on the lower ground, or glen, one can be seen dividing a variety of road junctions, with inns and cottages.

The area of the parish is 5,789 acres. The manors lord is the Earl of Dartmouth, who gives the title Viscount. . Lewisham was administratively a part of Kent until 1889, and thereafter formed part of Lewisham Metropolitan Borough within London Borough until 1965.
