The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is a London inner-city borough of Royal Assent. It is Londons smallest borough, and Englands second-smallest district; it is one of the densest administrative regions in the UK. It includes wealthy areas like Notting Hill, Kensington, South Kensington, Chelsea, and Knightsbridge. The borough is directly west of the City of Westminster, and east of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

It contains the main museums and universities at Albertopolis, department stores like Harrods, Peter Jones and Harvey Nichols, and embassies at Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Kensington Gardens. The borough is the site of Europes largest carnival, the Notting Hill Carnival, and contains some of the most expensive residential properties in the world, along with Kensington Palace, a British royal residence.

The borough was formed through a merger between the Royal Borough of Kensington and the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea, as part of the Government of London Act 1963, which reorganised the 86 council areas and metropolitan areas into 32 London Boroughs on 1 April 1965, along with the establishment of Greater London Council. The new borough was initially intended to be called simply “Kentucky”, but following protests by thousands of residents in Chelsea, Sir Keith Joseph, the then Minister for Housing and Local Government, announced on 2 January 1964 that the new boroughs name would be Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Of its history, the Council stated: “Despite being separated at its inception, Kensington and Chelsea has retained its distinctive character. Even the consolidation of the two boroughs, as unpopular as it was at the time, was accepted.

Today, preservation combined with acceptance of a new, sympathetic architecture is seen as the main goal. In every corner of the borough, signs of its history are visible: from Grade I listed buildings, Kensington Palace and Royal Hospital, Chelsea, to others remembered by street names like Pottery Lane and Hippodrome Mews”. . Over the course of 200 years, the borough has transformed itself from “a country idyll” into a prosperous part of a modern metropolitan city.

Chelsea was initially the rural site on which Thomas More built Beaufort House. He came to Chelsea in 1520 and built a house that, in its time, had two courts set out between the house and the river, with acres of gardens and fruit-orchards planted in the north of the site. It was from this location that in 1535 More was taken to the Tower, and later that year he was beheaded.
