Islington developed along the lines of the Great Northern Road, a vast village in Middlesex, which provided the name for the present-day Borough. This has caused a degree of confusion, since nearby areas can also be said to fall within the boundaries of Islington. This borough is bound to the west by Liverpool Road, and the south-east by City Road and Southgate Road. Its northernmost point is the area of Canonbury.

The major high street running north-south, Upper Street, is divided at the corner with Highbury, with Holloway Road on the west, and St Pauls Road on the east. The Angel Business Improvement District (BID), a district centred on the Angel Underground Station, exists in southern parts of the borough of Islington, as well as northern parts of two other areas within the borough – Finsbury and Pentonville. Islington was first named by the Saxons as Gieseldone (1005), later Gieslandune (1062). The name means “Gislas Hill” from the Old English personal names Gisla and dun (“hill”, “down”).

The name subsequently mutated into Isledon, and was still used until well into the seventeenth century, when a modern form emerged. In the Middle Ages, Isledon was only one of a number of smaller boroughs there, together with Barnersbury, Neweton Burewe, or Hey-bury, and Canonesbury (Barnsbury, Highbury, and Canonbury are names that were first recorded during the 13th and 14th centuries).

Some roads at the edges of the area, including Essex Road, were known by the medieval period as streets, perhaps suggesting Roman origins, but there is little physical evidence. What is known is that Great Northern Road, running from Aldersgate, came into use in the 14th century, linking up to the new turnpike (toll) that ran along Highgate Hill.

This was on the modern Upper Road, and a tollgate in Angel defined the villages boundaries. The backroad, the modern Liverpool Road, was mostly the driving-post, on which livestock would stop for the last part of the journey into Smithfield. Pens and sheds were built alongside the road to house animals.
