The London Borough of Haringey is a borough in north London, classified under some definitions as being within Inner London, while others categorised it as being within outer London. It was created in 1965 through an amalgamation of three previous boroughs. It shares borders with six other boroughs of London.

Clockwise from north, these are: Enfield, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Islington, Camden, and Barnet. Haringey covers over 11 square miles (28.5 km2). Some of the most familiar local landmarks include Alexandra Palace, the Bruce Castle, Jacksons Lane, Highpoint I & II, and Tottenham Hotspur FC.

The borough has extreme contrasts, with areas to the west, such as Highgate, Muswell Hill, and Crouch End, being some of the most affluent in the country; to the east of the borough, a number of the neighborhoods are classified as being in the 10% most deprived in the country. Haringey is also a geography-based borough with extreme contrasts. From the forested higher ground surrounding Highgate and Muswell Hill, which rises 426.5 feet (130.0 m), the land drops dramatically towards flat, open, low-lying ground alongside the River Lea to the east. The borough includes extensive areas of greenspace, over 25% of its total land area.

At the time of its final glacial maximum, Haringey was on the edge of an enormous mass of glaciers, reaching south to Muswell Hill. In the Iron Age and Roman periods, Haringey was inhabited by a Celtic tribe called the Catuvellauni, who had extensive lands centred on Hertfordshire and Middlesex. Roman presence is mainly attested through roads that they built across the area. Tottenham High Road was part of a major Roman thoroughfare, the Corniche. There were also Roman finds within the Borough, suggesting a possible Roman settlement.

In the fifth and sixth centuries, following a Saxon invasion, a settlement was founded at Haringehaia; its name is from Old English haeringe meaning a “hare pasture”. Haringey remained a rural area until the 18th century, when larger suburban houses nearer to London became more and more common. The arrival of the railways from the mid-19th century led to rapid urbanisation; by the end of the century, most of Haringey had been transformed from a rural environment into an urbanised one.
