The London Borough of Hackney is a borough in Inner London. The historic and administrative centre of Hackney is on Mare Street, 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Charing Cross. The borough is named for Hackney, its main district.
The south and east parts of the borough are generally considered to be part of East London, while the northwest is in North London. The London Plan issued by the Greater London Authority allocates entire boroughs to sub-areas for statutory purposes of surveillance, engagement, and resource allocation. The latest (2011) iteration of this plan allocates Hackney to the Eastern Sub-Region, whereas 2008 and 2004 versions assigned the borough to “North” and “East” Sub-Region, respectively.
The contemporary borough was formed in 1965 through merger between the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney with the much smaller Metropolitan Boroughs of Stoke Newington and Shoreditch. Hackney is bordered by Islington on the west, Haringey on the north, Waltham Forest on the north-east, Newham on the east, Tower Hamlets on the south-east, and the City of London on the south-west. Hackney was one of the host boroughs for the London Olympic Games in 2012, with several venues at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park falling within its boundaries.
During the Tudor period, the religious orders land was taken from the crown and sold off. Hackney then became the retreat for nobility, surrounding Hackney Central and Homerton. Henry VIIIs palace was near Lea Bridge Roundabout, the site of the current Bsix Sixth Form college. Sutton House, in Homerton High Street, is Hackneys oldest remaining house, first built in 1535 as Bricke Place for Sir Ralph Sadler, a diplomat.
The village of Hackney thrived as a country retreat from the Tudor period through to the end of the Georgian era. The first recorded instance of “Hackney coaches”–the precursor of the more general term “Hackney coach”–operating in London was 1621. The building of a railway in the 1850s ended the reputation for being a village, connecting Hackney with the rest of the city, and spurring on the growth.
