Enfield is a major city and formerly borough of North London, England, located within the ceremonial County of Greater London, as well as in the Ancient County of Middlesex. It is centered 10.1 miles (16.3 km) north-north-east of Charing Cross, with a population of 156,858 as of 2018. It includes the areas of Botany Bay, Brimsdown, Bulls Cross, Bullsmoor, Bush Hill Park, Clay Hill, Crews Hill, Enfield Road, Enfield Lock, Enfield Town, Enfield Wash, Forty Hill, Freezywater, Gordon Hill, Grange Park, Hadley Wood, Ponders End, and West End. Situated to the south of the Hertfordshire boundary and M25 motorway, it borders Waltham Cross to the north, Winchmore Hill and Edmonton to the south, Chingford and Waltham Abbey, via the River Lea, east and north-east, with Cockfosters, Monken Hadley, and Woodwood to the east, with the river Lea, and the worlds End.
Historically an ancient parish within the Middlesex Earldom of Edmonton, it was granted Urban District status in 1894, and Municipal Borough status in 1955. In 1965, it was combined with the municipal boroughs of Southgate and Edmonton to form London Borough of Enfield, a local government area in Greater London, with Enfield as its administrative centre. Enfield town, also known as Eadenfield, was a market town, which was chartered by Edward I in 1303, is Enfields commercial heartland, and is also where the parish church, St Andrews Eadenfield, was first built. The area is identified by the London Plan as one of 35 main centres within Greater London.
The Royal Small Arms Factory, in Enfield Lock, produces the famous Enfield shotgun. The Brimsdown industrial estate was the site of heavy industry, storage, and retail, while Wrights flour mill, in Ponders End, was Enfields oldest working industrial building. Forty Hall, in the location of Tudor Elyssyng House, is to the north, with Enfield Chase, the former Royal Hunting Ground, and Chase Farm Hospital in the west. The New River runs through Enfield from north to south, and a bypass, the New River Loop, circles the city centre, passing through Enfield Town Park.
