Ealing is a district of west London, England. It is located 7.5 miles (12.1 km) to the west of Charing Cross. In the London Borough of Ealing, it is one of the seven main towns in the borough (alongside Acton, Greenford, Hanwell, Northolt, Perivale, and Southall). Ealing, which is similar to the W5, W13 and NW10 postal codes, is the administrative center of the borough. It is identified as the main administrative centre in the London Plan.

Ealing is located within the historic County of Middlesex. Until Londons urban expansion of the late nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, Ealing was a rural village in Ealing Parish. Improved communications with London, climaxing in the 1838 railway station opening, transformed the local economy into supplying the market gardens, and ultimately suburban development. By 1902, Ealing had been called “the Queen of Suburbs” because of its verdant landscape, as well as being half-way between the City and Country. As part of the 20th-century growth of London, Ealing expanded greatly and increased its population.

It became a municipal borough in May 1901, and has been a part of Greater London since December 1965. It is now a major business and retail hub, with an emerging nighttime economy.

Ealing has characteristics of both leafy suburbia and urban sprawl. The neighbourhood of Pitshanger, and a few others, maintains a lower density, greenery, and architecture resembling a suburban village. Ealing Town Centre is commonly called Ealing Broadway, which is both a railway junction and shopping centre.

Most of Ealing, including the business district, South Ealing, Ealing Common, Montpelier, Pitshanger, and much of Hanger Hill, falls within the W5 postal code. Areas to the north-west of the city centre, such as Argyle Road and West Ealing, fall instead under the W13. A smaller area north-east of the town centre, close to Hanger Hill, falls within the postcode region of NW10. The population of Ealing (including Northfields) was 85,014 at the 2011 census.
