Croydon is a major city in south London, England, which gives its name to the London Borough of Croydon. It is one of the largest business districts of Greater London, with a wide-ranging shopping centre and a booming night-time economy. The whole city had a population of 192,064 in 2011, while the wider borough had 384,837. It is 9.4 miles (15.1 km) south of Charing Cross. It was originally part of Wallington Hundred, within Surreys historic County.

At the Norman Conquest of England, Croydon had a church, mill, and about 365 inhabitants, as recorded in Domesday Book of 1086. Croydon expanded during the medieval period to become a market town, as well as a center of coal-producing, tanning, and beer-making. The Surrey Iron and Steel Railway, running from Croydon to Wandsworth, opened in 1803, the first publicly owned railway. Later railway buildings in the 19th century helped to fuel the growth of Croydon as a suburban London city. By the start of the 20th century, Croydon was an important industrial region, known for its automobile manufacturing, metalworking, and Croydon airport.

In the mid-20th century, these sectors were replaced by retailing and a service economy, brought on by large-scale regeneration, resulting in the growth of office blocks and the Whitgift Centre, until 2008, the largest shopping centre in Greater London. Croydon was amalgamated with Greater London in 1965.

Croydon lies in the transport corridor between Central London and the South Coast of England, north of two large gaps in the North Downs, one reached from the A23 Brighton Road and mainline railways via Purley and Merstham, the other by the A22 from Purley to the M25 Godstone Interchange. Road traffic is diverted from a mostly pedestrianised city centre, consisting mostly of North End. East Croydon is the main centre of the National Rail Transport System, with frequent rapid services to Central London, Brighton, and the South Coast. The town is also at the heart of southern Englands only tramway system.

As the great majority of the names for places in the area are Anglo-Saxon, most philologists accept that the name Croydon is originally derived from Anglo-Saxon croh, meaning “crocus”, and denu, “valley”, suggesting, as with Saffron Walden in Essex, it was the centre for saffron farming. It has been suggested that such cultivation was probably carried out during the Roman period, where the crocus of saffron would have been grown for supply for London markets, probably for medicinal purposes, particularly to treat eyelid granules.
