The City of London is a borough, ceremonial county, and local authority district which contains the historic centre, and forms, along with Canary Wharf, London’s main central business district (CBD). It has formed most of London since Roman settlement of 1st century AD through medieval times, but since then, the modern borough named London has grown well outside of the boundaries of the City of London. The City is now a very small part of the metropolis of Greater London, although it remains an important part of the central part of London. Administratively, the City is not one of Londons boroughs, a status reserved for the other 32 boroughs (including Greater London’s sole other city, the City of Westminster). It is also an independent ceremonial borough, being encircled by Greater London, the smallest ceremonial borough in the UK. The City of London is commonly known as just The City (distinguishing itself from “the City of London” with a capital C) and is known as The Square Mile, since it is 1.12 square miles (716.80 acres; 2.90 km2) in size.
Both these terms are also frequently used as metonyms for the UKs commercial and financial services industries, which have continued their remarkable history of being heavily based in the City. London more commonly refers to either the vast metropolis of London, or 32 boroughs within Greater London, as well as to the City of London itself. This wider use of London is documented by, for example, Lord Henry Seymours Will in 1864.
The Citys local government, i.e., the London Corporation, is unique in Britain, and has some unusual duties for a local authority, for example, being a police power. It is also unusual in having responsibilities and property outside of its boundaries.
The Corporation is headed by the Lord Mayor of the City of London (an office distinct and far older than that of Mayor of London). The Lord Mayor, from November 2021, is Vincent Keaveny. The city is composed of 25 wards, and is administered from the historic Guildhall.
Other historical sites include St Pauls Cathedral, Royal Exchange, Mansion House, the Old Bailey, and Smithfield Market. Although outside the city, the nearby Tower of London is part of its ancient defence perimeter.
The City has responsibility for five bridges as the Trustee for Bridge House Estates: Blackfriars Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Southwark Bridge, London Bridge, and Tower Bridge.
The City is a major commercial and financial centre, with the Bank of England having its headquarters in the city. Throughout the 19th century, the City was a leading commercial center of the world, and continues to be an important business gathering place. London was the runner-up (after New York) on the Index of World Financial Centers, published in 2022. The insurance sector is located on the east side of the city, around the Lloyds Building. Since around 1980, there has been a second financial district outside of the city, in Canary Wharf, 2.5 miles (4 km) east.
