Bromley is a major city in London, England, and is part of the London Borough of Bromley. It is 9.3 miles (15.0 km) south-east of Charing Cross, with a population of an estimated 87,889 people in 2011. Originally part of Kent, Bromley became a market town, being granted charter in 1158.
Its position on the coach routes, and the 1858 opening of the railway station, were critical in its development, and in the transition from agrarian village to an urban city. As part of the suburban growth of London during the 20th century, Bromley saw significant increases in population, being made a council borough in 1903, becoming part of London Borough of Bromley in 1965. Today, Bromley forms the main shopping and business district. It was identified by the London Plan as one of 13 Greater London Metropolitan Centres.
Bromley was first recorded in the 862 Anglo-Saxon charter as Bromleag, meaning woodland glades in which brooms grew. It shares this Old English etymology with Great Bromley in Essex, but not the East End of Londons Bromley. The history of Bromley is strongly connected to Rochesters see.
In AD 862, the king of Kent, Ethelbert, granted lands that formed Bromley manor. In 1185, the palace at Bromley was built by Gilbert Glanvill, the Bishop of Rochester. The palace was held by the Bishops until 1845, when Coles Child, a wealthy local merchant and philanthropist, bought Bromley Palace (now a focal point for Bromley Civic Centre) and became Lord of the Manor.
The town was a major coach station en route from London to Hastings, the now-defunct Royal Bell Hotel (just off Market Place) is mentioned in Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice. It was a quiet, rural village until the arrival of railways in 1858 at Shortlands, leading to a fast rise, with peripheral commuter areas like Bickley (which subsequently flooded to Bromley Common) being developed to house those who wanted to live so conveniently near London.
Bromley, also known as Bromley St Peter and St Paul, formed an ancient parish within the parishes of Bromley and Beckenham, as well as the Kentish borough of Sutton-at-Hone. In 1840, it became part of an expanding Metropolitan police district. The parish adopted the Local Government Act of 1858, and in 1867, the Local Board was formed. The board was reconstituted in 1894 as Bromley Metropolitan Borough Council, with the parish becoming the Borough of Bromley. It formed part of the London Road Zone from 1924, and of the London Passenger Transport Zone from 1933.
In 1934, the Borough was extended by taking in 1,894 acres (7.66 km2) of land from the dissolved Bromley Countryside District, under the County Revision Order; this area included parts of the parishes of Farnborough, Heyes, Keston, and West Wickham. Bromley became part of the newly created Greater London Borough in 1965, in the new London Borough of Bromley.
