The London Borough of Barnet is a suburban London Borough located in north London. The borough was formed in 1965 from parts of the historic counties of Middlesex and Hertfordshire. It forms part of outer London, and is Londons largest borough in terms of population, at 384,774 residents, which also makes it Englands thirteenth largest district. The borough covers a surface of 86.74 km2 (33 sq mi), fourth highest among 32 London boroughs, and has a population density of 45.8 per hectare, ranking 25th. Barnet borders Hertfordshires Hertsmere borough to its north, and five other London boroughs: Camden and Haringey to its south-east, Enfield to its east, as well as Harrow and Brent, west of the old Watling Street (now A5 Road).

The main urban settlements in the borough are Hendon, Finchley, Golders Green, Friern Barnet, Chipping Barnet, Whetstone, and Edgware; there are also rural settlements, most notably Totteridge and Arkley, as well as rural areas and parts of the Green Belt. The local authority is London Borough of Barnet, based in Colindale. The borough was formed under the London Government Act 1963 in 1965, out of the Borough of Finchley, Borough of Hendon, and Friern Barnet Metropolitan District in Middlesex, and East Barnet Metropolitan Borough and Barnet Metropolitan District in Hertfordshire.

The act did not include a name for the new borough. A joint committee of councils due for consolidation suggested Northgate or North High.

The name of Barnet is from Old English baernet, meaning “land cleared by burning”. The area covered by the present day Borough has a long history. Evidence for Roman first-century pottery making has been found on Brockley Hill, while Roman coins of the third and fourth centuries were found on Burnt Oak.

Both sites are located along the Roman road of Watling Street, which ran from London (Londinium) to St Albans (Verulamium), and now forms the west boundary of the Borough. Hendon is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday book, but Barnet, Edgware and Finchley districts are not mentioned, perhaps because those areas were included within other manors.
