Wythenshawe is a borough in Manchester, England. Historically located in Cheshire, Wythenshawe was transferred in 1931 to Manchester city, who had begun building large housing estates there during the 1920s. With a land mass of about 11 square miles (28 km2), Wythenshawe became the largest council estate in Europe. Wythenshawe includes the boroughs of Baguley, Bwlch, Brooklands, Peel Hall, Newall Green, Woodhouse Park, Moss Nook, North Moor, Northenden, and Sharston.

The name Wythenshawe appears to derive from the Old English words widign=”woody” and sceaga=”wood” (compare the dialectal words shaw). The three old boroughs of Northenden, Baguley, and Northen Etchells officially became present-day Wythenshawe in 1931, following their merger with Manchester. Until that time, the name had referred to just Wythenshawe Hall and its grounds.

Due to cost-cutting, the Hall was closed temporarily to the public in 2010. One suggestion was that the Manchester City Council might sell the building to the National Trust. A Friends group was formed to support monthly opening days and events at the Hall. In March 2016, the halls roof and an upper storey were heavily damaged in an arson attack, and the clock tower was damaged as well.

Just south of Wythenshawe is Manchester Airport, previously called Ringway. Before the construction of Ringway Airport, the three agricultural fields between Ruckhouse Road and Wythenshawe Road on Northern Moor, on the northern edge of what is now Wythenshawe, were used as the Manchester Aerodrome (Wythenshawe). It was Britains first municipal airport, operating from April 1929 to early 1930. A shed was converted to serve as a hangar, while the farmhouse served as an administrative building.

Temporary fuel pumps were installed. The last recorded flight out of Wythenshawe Airfield was 19 June 1930. Wythenshawe was within the Church of Englands Chester diocese until 1933, when it was transferred to its neighbouring Diocese of Manchester.
