Wolverhampton is a city, metropolis, and administrative center in the West Midlands, United Kingdom. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 249,470. People of the town are called “Wulfrunians”.

Historically a part of Staffordshire, the city originally developed as a market town, specialising in wool trading. In the industrial revolution, it became a leading center of coal mining, steel manufacture, lock-making, and car and motorcycle manufacturing. The economy of the city is still based on engineering, including the major aerospace industry, and a services sector.

Local tradition states that King Wulfhere of Mercia founded St. Marys Abbey at Wolverhampton in 659. Wolverhampton is recorded as being the scene of the decisive battle of the united Mercian Angles and West Saxons against a marauding Danish army in 910, though sources are vague about whether the actual battle took place in Wednesfield or Tettenhall, though these places were outside the boundaries of Wolverhampton at the time. The Mercians and West Saxons claimed the decisive victory, with the field at Woden being recognised by a number of place names within Wednesfield.

In 985, King Ethelred the Unready granted lands in the area called Hulfrun by royal charter to the Lady of Wulfrun, thus founding a settlement. In 994, the Priory was founded in Wolverhampton, and Wulfrun granted land in Upper Arley, in Worcestershire, at Bilston, Willenhall, Wednesfield, Pelsall, the Hay of Ogley near Braunhills, Hilton near Walsall, Hatterston, Kinvaston, Hilton near Wolverhampton, and Featherstone.

This became the site of present-day St. Peters Church. A statue of Lady Wolfrun, sculptured by Sir Charles Wheeler, is seen at the staircase outside the church.
