West Wickham is an area in south-east London and is part of the London Borough of Bromley. It is west of Hayes and Coney Hill, north of Spring Park and Shirley and lies south of Park Langley and Eden Park. It is 10.3 miles south-east of Charing Cross.

West Wickham has four states schools (all of which are primary schools); they are known as Oak Lodge, Wickham Common, Pickhurst and Hawes Down. West Wickham also represented Bromley in the London Youth Games and they won a hockey gold medal in 2012. There are no secondary school in West Wickham – but there are some  in neighboring areas; Hayes School is located in Hayes, Langley Park School for Boys and Langley Park School for Girls are located in Beckenham and Ravens Wood School is located in Keston.

Several buses from The Transport For London buses which connect services to areas including Beckenham. Bromley, Croydon, Hayes, Penge, Sydenham and Thornton Heath.

Pass rates have been an area of interest for some time now for all learner drivers, instructors and examiners. We had a look into the DVSA stats regarding pass rates and have gathered some information. We found out that the national average pass rate in the UK stands at 45.9% – as for London it is lower than that and stands at 40.8%. Look at the table below, these are the pass rates for West Wickham, for the last five years.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
49.3% 49.1% 50.7% 47.1% 45.8%

As you can see West Wickham’s pass rates have been consistent and have also been above the average for both London and UK. These pass rates are excellent, especially for a test center in London. But do not put all your focus into pass rates, as the outcome of your driving test depends on you.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
The test is situated on the High Street where you will find many pedestrian crossing. There are several pedestrian crossings in the West Wickham area. People have been known to fail their tests to technical knowledge of the crossing rather than driving itself. This is way part of the intensive driving lessons in West Wickham will ensure that you understand fully not only how to deal with pedestrian crossings but how to deal with pedestrians in general.

It is important to note that a zebra crossing running across the road without a break in it is counted as one crossing. The driver must wait until the pedestrian is completely of the road. However, a zebra crossing with a break, due to a central reservation in the middle, is counted as two completely separate crossings. Therefore, if the pedestrian has safely crossed your side of the road and is on the central reservation, you as a driver may proceed.

On the West Wickham driving test route, if you encounter a traffic light crossing, it could be either a pelican crossing or the puffin crossing.

At a pelican crossing the light will change from red to flashing amber which means that a driver must wait for any pedestrian to cross the road. However, if there are no pedestrians on the road, the driver should proceed through the flashing amber lights. On a puffin crossing, there is no flashing amber. Instead, after red, the light will change to red and amber together before changing to green. The red and amber light together means that you must wait for the green light before proceeding.

Unlike a zebra crossing, if a light-controlled crossing has a central reservation in the middle, it is still counted as one crossing and the driver must wait until the pedestrian is full of the road. The only time a light-controlled crossing is treated as two separate crossings is if it has a central reservation that is “staggered”

ONE WAY ROADS
There are a few one-way roads on the West Wickham driving test route. Many learner drivers have been known to fail at West Wickham because they were not aware that they were on a one-way system. Therefore watching road signs and road marking are vital in order to pass your driving test at West Wickham. At the entrance to a one-way road, you will be a blue rectangular sign with a white arrow. Please note that this is different from a head-only sign which is a blue circle with an arrow.

The Emergency Stop
Learning the emergency stop is an important part of your intensive driving lessons in West Wickham. However, in the actual practical test only one in three candidates will be asked to carry out the emergency stop.

The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that you can stop suddenly but safely. The examiner will tell you a few minutes in advance that you will be caring out the emergency stop. That words used by the examiner will be, “ ‘Shortly, I shall ask you to carry out an emergency stop. I will raise my right hand as a signal and shout, Stop. When I shout Stop, I would like you to stop promptly as if a child had stepped in front of you.”

You need to drive normally before the emergency stop. Do not accelerate suddenly to build up a good speed and on the other hand, do not purposely drive slow in anticipation of the emergency stop. Many learner drivers who fail on this exercise often do so out of fear, driving slow believing it would be easier, or failing to make proper observations after the emergency stop.
