Didsbury is a suburb area of Manchester, England, located on the northern banks of the River Mersey, (7 km) south of Manchester city centre. The population was 26,788 at the 2011 census. Within the boundaries of the historical County of Lancashire, records of Didsbury existing as a small village date back to the 13th century. Its early history is dominated by being part of the manor of Withington, a feudal manor covering much of the area now southern Manchester. Didsbury was described in the 18th century as a township separate from external influences.

In 1745, Charles Edward Stuart crossed the River Mersey at Didsbury during the Jacobite March southwards from Manchester to Derby, and later during his retreat. Didsbury was largely rural until the mid-19th century, when it underwent a period of development and urbanisation during the industrial revolution. It became a part of Manchester in 1904. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds was formed at Didsbury in 1889. A charter granted around 1260 shows a grain-mill operating at Didsbury, on the River Mersey, but the first mention of Didsbury is a charter dating to 1235 recording the granting of land to build a chapel.

The church was named St. Jamess in 1855. It underwent extensive renovations in the 1620s and again in the 19th century, though much of the stonework seen today dates to the 17th century. The chapel was built near to one of two public houses which backed up to the adjacent village green, the Ye Olde Cock Inn, so-called due to a cockfight which once took place there. The parsonage quickly gained a reputation as being haunted; the servants refused to sleep in the premises, and in 1850, it was abandoned. Local Alderman Fletcher Moss bought the home in 1865, and lived there for over 40 years.
