Walsall is a market town and administrative centre in West Midlands County, England. Historically part of Staffordshire, it is located nine miles (14 km) north-west of Birmingham, seven miles (11 km) east of Wolverhampton, and nine miles (14 km) from Lichfield. Walsall is the administrative centre of the wider Walsall Metropolitan Borough. It was transferred in 1974 from Staffordshire County to the newly created County of the West Midlands.

At the 2011 census, the Town Buildings area had a population of 67,594, and the wider borough had 269,323. Neighbouring communities within the borough included Darlaston, Braunhills, Pelsall, Willenhall, Bloxwich, and Aldridge.

The name Walsall is derived from “Walh ha-lh”, meaning Valley of the Welsh, in reference to the Englishmen who originally lived in the area. However, a manor is thought to have been held here by William fitzAnsculf, who held a number of manors throughout the Midlands. By the early part of the thirteenth century, Walsall was a small market town, and the weekly market was introduced in 1220, held on a Tuesday. The Mayor of Walsall was created as a political office in the 14th century.

The manor of Walsall was held by the Crown, and was granted as reward to the Crowns proteges. In 1525, it was granted to Henry, Duke of Richmond, a bastard son of the King, and in 1541, it was granted to the courtier Sir John Dudley, who would become Duke of Northumberland. It was confiscated by Queen Mary in 1553, after Northumberland was found guilty of treason. Queen Marys grammar school was founded in 1554, with the school carrying the queens personal insignia as an emblem: a Tudor rose and the sheaf of arrows from Marys mother, Katherine of Aragon, tied in the Staffordshire knot.

The town was visited by Queen Elizabeth I, when it was known as Walsall. It was also visited by Henrietta Maria in 1643. She stayed one night in the town at a house called White Hart, located on Caldmores block.
