Wadsley Bridge is a hamlet in the south-east corner of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, three miles (4.8 km) north-west of the town centre. The area is a mix of residential homes and small industrial and commercial premises. The suburb falls under the City of Hillsborough ward. Wadsley Bridge is named for the bridge in the area SK334905 called Highbridge, which is located at the east end of Sheffield Wednesdays stadium, at the site currently called Owlerton.

The bridge carried a railway line between the villages of Ecclesfield and Wadsley across the river Don at the beginning of the 17th century, and the area immediately surrounding the bridge became known as Wadsley Bridge. The original description was “a small hamlet by the Wadsley bridge”. The middle of the borough has now moved north, being centered around a railway bridge on the A61 at SK334914, with many thinking that this bridge is why the area is named. Wadsley Bridge began expanding in the 18th century as water power was used, with various mills being built over the River Don on Clay Wheels Lane and the bottom of Leppings Lane. John Hoult had a paper mill, later converted to steel sanding, operated by Sanderson Bros.

The outskirts were transformed with the opening of the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester railway in 1845; the railway station at Wadsley Bridge was opened to serve the community, and a railway bridge was built across a rutted track running northwards into Ecclesfield, later to become the A61. The Sheffield tramway was extended to Wadsley Bridge in June 1924, the ground below the railway bridge had to be dug down to allow the trams to go underneath. The bridge itself was a small, arched stone structure that later had problems being passed by double-decker buses, having to shift into the centre of the road to avoid hitting the stonework. It was replaced by a taller, wider structure at the beginning of 1970, as the A61 became dual carriageway.

Other industrial sites in the area at the beginning of the 20th century included Leppings Forge Iron & Steel Works, on the corner of Leppings Lane and Penistone Road, built by Joseph Clifton Allen (d.1924). This was demolished in the 1960s following the death of Josephs son, Charles Edmund Allen (died December 1954), and the site is now a petrol station. Niagara Works, in Clay Wheels Lane, produced rim-cutting tools; the company was named for Niagara Weir, located on the River Don. Moss and Gambles Forge, on the bottom of Fox Hill Road, had a steam-powered, ten-ton hammer, Sheffields largest at the time. The Moss and Gamble site had two ponds for supplying water to the works, which were filled and used for new housing in the 1960s; the plant itself was converted into flats, called Baxter Mews.
