Tyldesley is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. At the United Kingdom census of 2001, the built-up area of Tyldesley, not including Shakerley, had a population of 16,142.

The remains of the Roman road that passed through the township, in its old route between Coccium (Wigan) and Mamucium (Manchester), were apparent in the 19th century. Following the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain, Tyldesley was part of Warrington Manor, until the Norman Conquest of England, when the settlement formed a township called Tyldesley-with-Shakerley, within the old parish of Leigh. The factory system and textile manufacturing of the Industrial Revolution caused a growth and urbanisation, and in the early 20th century, it was said the mill town was “eminently typical of an industrial area, where natural features were largely destroyed in favour of factories, iron foundries, and colliers”. After industrial activities declined at the end of the 20th century, land reclamation and post-war housing developments altered the landscape and encouraged economic activity along Elliott Street.

The remains of the Roman road serving encampments in Coccium (Wigan) and Mamucium (Manchester) run through the area. It ran from the Delph Keeper at Boothstown, crossing Mort Lane, just north-west of Cleworth Hall, and just south of Old Hall in Shakerley. The road continued to Atherton Vale, where coins had been found, and continued to Gibfield and Wigan.

In 1947, two urns were found containing around 550 Roman bronze coins, struck from A.D. 259 to A.D. 278, close to the old Tyldesley-Worsley boundary. The coins are held at the British Museum.

After Roman rule ended in Britain, and the Anglo-Saxon story of England was not written.

Evidence for Saxons is provided by place names that include the Old English suffix leah, like Tyldesley, Shakerley, and Astley.
