Tower Hamlets is one of Londons most well-connected areas, with access improving every day. The Jubilee line has been upgraded recently, improving both capacity and frequency. The Docklands Light Railway is under major transformation, with a three-car upgrade being introduced, increasing capacity by 50%. The aging East London line has recently closed, to enable major upgrades and extensions at West Croydon to the south and Dalston to the north. In the longer term, Crossrail will deliver a quantum shift in improving the boroughs public transport capability, as well as acting as the main catalyst for further regeneration.
Two new Crossrail stations are proposed for the borough, in Whitechapel and on the Isle of Dogs. The borough supports the project on principle, but has continually sought to mitigate the environmental impacts of such a large-scale engineering project. The council has led these negotiations throughout the councils processes, and has so far secured over double as many formal commitments and safeguards from project backers as any other borough. The tunnelling methodology has been changed dramatically, the level of surface interventions has been reduced, the noise reduction has been reduced, and proposed work hours reduced, all of which are a direct result of the boroughs lobbying. All of these measures are designed to mitigate environmental impacts from construction.
Crossrail is expected to be opened to the public in 2017.
