Tolworth is  suburban area and is part of the Royal Borough of Kingston & Thames, Greater London. It is 11 miles southwest of Charing Cross. Long Ditton, New Malden, Kingston, Surbiton, Berrylands, Hinchley Wood, Chessington, Ewel and Worcester Park Neighbour Tolworth. Tolworth is divided into two sections by the A3 Kingston Bypass and by the Greater London, Surrey Border.

Tolworth is also know for its different facilities such as Tolworth Tower, the Tolworth Greenway, Tolworth Court Farm, Tolworth Community Center, Tolworth Hospital and two churches which are known as St Georges church which was built in 1934 and the Roman Catholic Church which was built in 1958. Tolworth Tower is situated west of the A3 in Tolworth Broadway and the tower is 265 feet high with 22 floors.

Toworth is also very well known for its Tolworth Railway Station which is served by the South Western Railway; which has services direct to London Waterloo (northbound) and Chessington South (southbound). Trains come to the station every half-hour from a little after 06:30 until 21:00 after which it is hourly until the last train a little after 23:00.

The national average pass rate in UK is 45.9%, London has a lower national average pass rate and stands at 40.8%. The table below shows the pass rates for Tolworth London below, for the last five years.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
49.7% 50.0% 49.5% 50.9% 50.3%

As you can see, Tolworth’s pass rates are higher than both the UK’s pass rates and London’s pass rates. This is one of the few test centers that have a higher pass rate. Overall, Tolworth’s pass rates are above average. However, do not put all your focus on pass rates – as the outcome of your test, depends on you.

Document Checks
On the day of the driving test, It’s important that you take your provisional driving licence to the test as the examiner will need to check that it is valid. You will not need to take your theory certificate as the examiner will be able to check it on the system. Tolworth driving test occasionally starts at 7.13 am when the examiner may not have access to the checking system. It is therefore advisable to have your certificate number just in case.

You will be required to bring a car for the test which is insured for you to drive and have a valid MOT if the vehicle is over three years old. The examiner will not ask you to see any paperwork relating to insurance or MOT as they will be able to check this electronically. If you require an emergency car hire for your driving test, accompanied by a qualified driving instructor, DTC UK can arrange this for you.

Independent Drive
The independent drive takes up half of the driving test at Tolworth . It is not an opportunity for you to program the sat-nav for the beach, put on the cruise control, and head off wherever you like. The examiner can ask you to follow road signs and road markings to a set destination or ask to follow directions given by a satnav.

The independent drive is a bit different to normal driving. Let’s say you’re doing a semi intensive crash course with DTC, your instructor will say, “at the roundabout, turn right.” Immediately, you know that you are approaching a roundabout. You also know that you need to start the MSM routine.

However, in the independent driving section of the practical test, you will need to identify that you are approaching a roundabout and then you need to decide when to start the Mirror, Signal & Manoeuvre routine.

If you’re unsure as to where you are going, you can ask the examiner. The driving examiners at Tolworth will not mind and will willingly help you. This is because they know that you have identified the roundabout in good time and want to start the MSM routine. Having said this, if you reached the roundabout and then asked the examiner which direction you were going, they would not help you because, at that point, you may already be in the wrong position to turn where the examiner wanted you to go.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
The center is close to the high street with many pedestrian crossings. People have been known to fail their tests to technical knowledge of the crossing rather than driving itself. This is way part of the intensive driving lessons in Tolworth will ensure that you understand fully not only how to deal with pedestrian crossings but how to deal with pedestrians in general.

It is important to note that a zebra crossing running across the road without a break in it is counted as one crossing. The driver must wait until the pedestrian is completely of the road. However, a zebra crossing with a break, due to a central reservation in the middle, is counted as two completely separate crossings. Therefore, if the pedestrian has safely crossed your side of the road and is on the central reservation, you as a driver may proceed.

On the Tolworth driving test route, if you encounter a traffic light crossing, it could be either a pelican crossing or the puffin crossing.

At a pelican crossing the light will change from red to flashing amber which means that a driver must wait for any pedestrian to cross the road. However, if there are no pedestrians on the road, the driver should proceed through the flashing amber lights. On a puffin crossing, there is no flashing amber. Instead, after red, the light will change to red and amber together before changing to green. The red and amber light together means that you must wait for the green light before proceeding.

Unlike a zebra crossing, if a light-controlled crossing has a central reservation in the middle, it is still counted as one crossing and the driver must wait until the pedestrian is full of the road. The only time a light-controlled crossing is treated as two separate crossings is if it has a central reservation that is “staggered”

Dual Carriageways
There is a high possibility of going on the A3 dual carriageway. If on a dual carriageway, it is important to remember that you should always stay in the left-hand lane unless overtaking or turning right.
