Thornton is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. It lies west of Bradford, with neighbouring Allerton, it has a combined population of 15,004 residents, which increased to 17,276 in the 2011 census. Its best-known residents are The Brontes.

The preserved heartland area of the village maintains a character typical of the Pennines, with houses built in stone, and topped by a stone shingle. The surrounding areas are made up of more modern housing, while remaining isolated from the rest of Bradford by the green fields.

Thornton comes from Old English, meaning the tree with the Thorn in the farmhouse or hamlet. It is mentioned in Domesday Book of the 11th century, when it was laid to waste by the North Harries of William the Conqueror, as retribution for the revolt against Norman invaders of 1066. Thornton was annexed to the city of Bradford in 1899, and has been part of the boundaries of the Metropolitan Borough of City of Bradford since 1974, where it forms part of Thornton and Allerton wards. Its elevation, poor soil, isolation from main transportation routes, and annual precipitation in excess of 34 inches limit agricultural production.

Resources like coal, iron, and sandstone, development of turnpike roads, and the arrival of railways allowed Thornton to share the prosperity generated by woolstack trading during the nineteenth century. The increasing use of steam-powered mills (at the expense of earlier methods of producing cottage industries) concentrated manufacture in a valley of the town centre. Foreign imports, the Second World War, and closed railroads contributed to a drop in production. Today, Thornton is a suburban housing estate of Bradford.

The principal thoroughfare that passes through the village is Market Street. This street was bypassed by a new Thornton Road in 1826 (the modern day B6145) and, being an extremely early bypass, much of the new construction has since been done on Thornton Road. This has left Market Street mostly intact, retaining its original character and the stonework of buildings. This street forms the basis for a conservation area within the village.
