Sunningdale is a larger village, with retail hinterland, and is a civic parish within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

It occupies the extreme south-east corner of Berkshire, England. It has a railway station on the (London) Waterloo-Read line, and is flanked by green belts including Sunningdale Golf Club and Wentworth Golf Club. Its north-eastern fringe is adjacent to the Lake of Virginia. Sunningdale is adjacent to Surrey, lying just across the river Sunninghill, (from which it takes its name) from Ascot. It is to the south of the Lake of the River Wear.

It is centrally located 23.2 miles (37.3 km) to the west of south-west Charing Cross, London. The nearest large towns are 5.5 to 6.5 miles distant: Bracknell, Camberley, Staines-on-Thames, and Woking. It is connected to two of them by the A30 Old Trunk Road, through which Camberley benefits from a flyover above the major crossroads road (the A322) at Bagshot. Sunningdale has a railway station on the Waterloo-to-Read line. The A30, which is bypassed here by the M3 motorway several miles away, has a single grade-separated crossing, built near the centre of the town in the 19th century.

The present-day civic parish of Sunningdale came into being in 1894, following provisions of the Local Government Act 1894; previously, the village had been part of Old Windsor. It was, until 1995, partially within Berkshire and partially within Surrey. The Surrey part of the village, known as Broomhall, was also divided between the constituencies of Surrey Heath and Runnymede. This initial provision caused problems, which were resolved following extensive local consultation amongst two County Councils, three Borough Councils, and four Parish Councils. As a result, its former Surrey district was amalgamated with the remainder of its population into the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, within the county of Royal Berkshire (which became an unadministrative borough in 1995).

The area is popular among professional golfers, thanks to the adjacent greens, including Sunningdale Golf Club and Wentworth Golf Club.
