St Albans is a cathedral city in Hertfordshire, England; it is east of Hemel Hempstead and West of Hatfield, this is 20 miles north-west of London and was the first major town road on the old Roman Road of Watling Street – this was mainly used by travelers heading north and started to be known as the roman city Verulamium. This is within both the London Commuter Belt and the Greater London Built-up Area. It is the fourth most popular area in Hertfordshire.
St Alban was known as a rural market town (a Christian pilgrimage site), before the 20th century, and it became one of the main stops to and from London accounting for its numerous old inns. Between 1801 and 1861, it’s population grew at a slower pace than London – this means it increased by 8-9% per decade.
An interesting fact is that from 1952, it is known that Stephen Hawking studied at St Albans School and he also attended St Albans High School for girls when younger boys could attend one of the houses.
Pass rates are one of the things that interest Learner drivers – they may want to know how many attempts it may take to pass a test or whether or not they have a better chance of passing. Did you know that those in the UK have a 45.9% chance of passing their test? See the table below for St Albans Test center for the last five years.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
48.5% | 45.5% | 43.7% | 43.8% | 41.8% |
These pass rates are lower than the national average in recent years, the difference has not been that great. We always say, do not focus too much on pass rates, rather focus on yourself as it all depends on the time and effort you put in.
St Albans is a small town located North of London. It has a small car-park at the front which means that the examiner may ask you to carry out the bay park exercise at the center itself. This can be requested at the start or at the very end of the test. The examiner can ask you to reverse into a bay of your choice or you may be asked to drive forward into a bay and then reverse out of it. During your semi intensive driving lessons at St Albans, your DTC driving instructor will teach you the bay park in various public car parks. However, please remember that just because St Albans test centre has a car park, the examiner does not have to request the reverse manoeuvre at the centre. You could be asked to carry out the parallel park between two cars on a public road or asked to stop on the right-hand side of a road and then reverse back.
PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
The practical test center is located close to high street with many pedestrian crossings. People have been known to fail their tests for technical knowledge of the crossing rather than driving itself. This is why part of the intensive driving lessons in St Albans will ensure that you understand fully not only how to deal with pedestrian crossings but how to deal with pedestrians in general.
It is important to note that a zebra crossing running across the road without a break in it is counted as one crossing. The driver must wait until the pedestrian is completely off the road. However, a zebra crossing with a break, due to a central reservation in the middle, is counted as two completely separate crossings. Therefore, if the pedestrian has safely crossed your side of the road and is on the central reservation, you as a driver may proceed.
On the St Albans driving test route, if you encounter a traffic light crossing, it could be either a pelican crossing or the puffin crossing.
At a pelican crossing the light will change from red to flashing amber which means that a driver must wait for any pedestrian to cross the road. However, if there are no pedestrians on the road, the driver should proceed through the flashing amber lights. On a puffin crossing, there is no flashing amber. Instead, after red, the light will change to red and amber together before changing to green. The red and amber light together means that you must wait for the green light before proceeding.
Unlike a zebra crossing, if a light-controlled crossing has a central reservation in the middle, it is still counted as one crossing and the driver must wait until the pedestrian is full of the road. The only time a light-controlled crossing is treated as two separate crossings is if it has a central reservation that is “staggered”
Reverse Manoeuvres
During your semi intensive driving course at St Albans, you will be taught to reverse safely with due regard to other road users. There are four manoeuvres you will learn during your crash driving course. However, in the actual driving test, the examiner will choose one of them. The four manoeuvres include parallel parking, stopping on the right-hand side of the road and then reversing back, reversing into a bay, and finally driving forward into a bay and then reversing back. The reverse manoeuvres are conducted in quire residential roads.
