Smethwick is an industrial city in Sandwell, West Midlands, England, historically located within Staffordshire. It is located four miles (6 km) west of the centre of Birmingham. In 2019, Smethwick Ward had an estimated population of 15,246 people, and a larger sub-district, Built-up Area, had 53,653.
The name Smethwick has been suggested to mean “Smiths Place of Work”, but more recent interpretations suggest that the name means “settlement in smooth ground”. Smethwick is recorded in Domesday Book as Smedeuuich, a D in that spelling being an Anglo-Saxon eth.
Until the late 18th century, it was a remote hamlet in south Staffordshire, adjacent to Harborne village. Harborne became part of the Birmingham county Borough, then transferred from Staffordshire to Warwickshire in 1891, leaving Smethwick within Staffordshire. The oldest operational motor engine in the world, the Smethwick engine, built by Boulton & Watt, was first located off Bridge Street, Smethwick.
It is now in the Thinktank, the new Birmingham Science Museum.
One company that stands out is the London Works, a production facility of Fox Henderson, which made the steel frame of Crystal Palace. It was founded by Charles Fox, whose inventions included the first patent railroad spike. Among his famous employees was William Siemens, the famous mechanical and electrical engineer.
The firm was bankrupted in 1855 due to an inability by the Overseas Railway to pay for work done. The site was subsequently used by GKN Company. In 2015, the site was cleared for a new Midlands Metropolitan University hospital, intended to merge Sandwell General Hospital, West Bromwich, and the city hospital, Dudley Road. Work on the site subsequently came to a halt due to a slump in the building trade.
A 1906 Willss cigarettes advert showing “Smethwick boroughs use of sigils instead of arms”. The seal bears the Latin motto, Orbis Terrarum Officina (“Workshop of the World”), and shows James Watts Engine, the Lighthouse (representing the glassworks of Chance Brothers), the Gasometer, and the Blacksmith working on his anvil.
