Ryton-on-Dunsmore is a village and civic parish within Rugby borough, Warwickshire, situated 5.5 miles (8.8 km) south-east of Coventry and 7.5 miles (12.1 km) west of Rugby, England. The 2001 census recorded the population in the parish as 1,672, which increased to 1,813 in the 2011 census.

The dual carriageway A45 passes through Ryton, with neighbouring villages including Bubbenhall, Stretton-on-Dunsmore, and Wolston. Garden Organic, a leading UK-based charity for growing organic food, has a 10 acres (4 ha) showcase garden dedicated to organic growing in the village. Ryton Pools Country Park is approximately one mile south-west of the village.

The former mill site, also known as Ryton Plant, has been a key feature of the village for over sixty years. It is situated between the A45 (north-east) and A423 (south-west) motorway, within the county of Warwickshire. The south east part of the mill site was bounded by the village of Ryton-on-Dunsmore.

The factory was initially built in 1940 by Rootes Group for aircraft engines in the Second World War. After the war, it became headquarters for the Rootes Group, but when the organization went into financial difficulties in the 1960s, the company (in stages) and therefore the plant was taken over by American auto-making behemoth Chrysler. Chrysler itself entered financial difficulties, and sold the factory in 1978 for a token $1.00 USD to PSA Peugeot Citroen, and from that point all cars produced at the factory were badged Talbots, the revival of the old name for a replacement of the Chrysler name in the UK, and Simca on the continent.

Peugeot began building its 309 there on 28 October 1985, and the 405 joined it by late 1987. This followed Peugeots decision, made in 1985, to drop the Talbot brand, but to keep the older factories at Rootes Group and Simca, to produce cars with Peugeots name. Production of Peugeot 309 was moved to France in 1989, and the factory became briefly a single-model factory, producing the 405, but 306 joined at the end of 1992, and was the mainstay of production for some time following the demise of the 405 in autumn 1995. The Estate model was not phased out until 1997, but was always produced in France, and Peugeot decided to manufacture the successor model of the 405 (406) in France.

The second production line was reactivated during summer 1998, when the production of the 206 began, with the 206 being the only vehicle produced in the facility, following the discontinuation of production of the 306 in spring 2001. Peugeot also decided to manufacture a new 307 in France instead of at Ryton. In January 2004, Peugeot decided to no longer manufacture the 207 in Ryton, thereby leaving the plant at risk of closure. In February 2004, the 1,000,000th 206 was produced. In April 2006, Peugeot decided the Ryton factory would be closed by July 2007.

However, in October 2006, Peugeot announced it was closing the plant six months earlier than planned. It closed in fact on 12 December 2006, with the 140-acre (57 ha) site sold in March 2007 to the Trenport Investments Ltd developers for industrial purposes. Demolition of the factory began on 12 November 2007. In October 2012, Network Rail acquired the site from Prologis, and built the goods-hauling distribution center. The centre opened the following year, serving as the National Delivery Service hub for Network Rail.
