Richmond is a city in South West London, located 8.2 miles (5.5 km) west-southwest of Charing Cross. It is situated on the meandering River Thames, and has a number of parks and green spaces, including Richmond Park, as well as a number of protected conservation areas, including most of Richmond Hill. A special act of parliament protects Richmonds picturesque views across the Thames. Richmond was founded after the construction of the Henry VIII palace at Richmond Palace in the 16th century, which is where the city gets its name.

During this time, the city and the palace were especially associated with Elizabeth I, who spent her final days there. During the 18th century, Richmond Bridge was completed, and a number of Georgian terraces were built, especially around Richmond Green and Richmond Hill. Those that survived are still very well preserved, with several listed buildings designated for architectural or historical importance.

The opening of Richmond railway station in 1846 was a significant event in the towns assimilation into rapidly expanding London. Richmond was previously part of the ancient parish of Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey County. In 1890, the city became a municipal borough, later expanded to encompass parts of Kew, Ham, Petersham, and Mortlake (North Sheen). The municipal borough was abolished in 1965, when, in local government redistribution, Richmond was transferred from Surrey to Greater London.

Richmond is now part of the London Borough of Richmond on Thames, with a population of 21,469 (comprising of North Richmond and South Richmond wards). It has a substantial business and retail centre, with an emerging daytime and nighttime economy. The name Richmond-upon-Thames is frequently used, inaccurately, for the city of Richmond: indeed (unlike neighbouring Kingston-upon-Thames), the suffix is correctly used only for a reference to a borough in London.
