Newton Heath is an area in Manchester, England, located 2.8 miles (4.5 km) north-east of the centre of Manchester, and has a population of 9,883. Historically part of Lancashire, Newton was previously a farming district, but adopted a factory-based system following the industrial revolution. The main industry of the area became engineering, though many were employed in mining and textile industries at the prosperous areas of Clayton Vale and Bradford.

Newton included the present-day Miles Platting, which extended as far as Failsworth. It was bordered on all four sides by brooks and rivers: the Medlock, Morton Brook, Newton Brook, and Shooters Brook. With the creation of the Myles Plat, the remaining part of Newton became known as Newton Heath. Newton Chapel, which would become All Saints parish church, Newton Heath, began in 1556, an age of major turbulence religiously (the first of King Henry VIIIs daughters, Mary 1, was on the throne), and residents were predominantly puritanical in sympathies.

It was built withwattle and daub; the first of about eight chapels of ease within the Manchester Collegiate Church (MCC), the nearest other chapel of ease being in Gorton (later in St James). The lands owned by Newton are part of the MCCs Historic Estate. Newton Chapel stood in the middle of the heath, high on ground, and was on the site of an ancient Roman road that ran from Chester to Manchester (this road was present-day Briscoe Lane, Gaskell Street, and in a straight line to Roman Way, Failsworth) and to York, where it met a road linking the boroughs of Moston and Droylsden. Nearby is the road connecting the townsships of Manchester, Failsworth and Oldham. Newton Chapel was rebuilt in 1598, and a piece of ancient wood found amongst the rubble during its 1814 reconstruction was found to bear a date of 1556, so that 1556 is a likely date for the earliest construction.
