Mitcham got its name from old English from a word that means ‘big settlement’ and it is based within The London Borough of Merton situated 7.2 miles southwest of Charing Cross. It is mainly known as a residential suburb with nearby cities such as Croydon, Sutton, Streatham, Brixton and Merton – some nearby areas include Mitcham Library and Mitcham Cricket Green.
Did you know that the Mitcham Town has been around for over 1000 years? It has grown a lot more since then. Due to it being situated on the banks of the River Wandle, there are a a lot of activities that people can enjoy around the area such as fishing, kayaking and sailing.
Travelling around Mitcham could never be easier, as there are many bus routes, which run through town alongside a train station. This station was rebuilt back in 1838 and is now the most popular way of travelling; Mitcham can be reached by three tube stations which include Wimbledon, Tooting Broadway and Mitcham Eastfield’s. Some buses include 201, 264 and 270 which go through the entire district to Wimbledon, Colliers Wood and Lambton Road.
Learner drivers are always interested in knowing the pass rates of where they are due to take their driving test – so we went in and searched for some statistics and this is what we found out. If your based in London, the national average pass rate, stands at 40.8%, however, in comparison to this, the UK national average pass rate stands at 45.9%. So what about Mitcham? Please see the pass rates for Mitcham for the last five years below.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
41.1% | 42.1% | 41.2% | 41.3% | 42.2% |
Mitcham pass rates are higher than the London’s national average – so there is not much to complain about. It is not a very good idea, to depend solely on pass rates, as this does nothing for you in your test, you do everything yourself. Even if your test center has a 85% pass rate, there is still a 15% chance that you may fail. All you need to do, is keep motivated, keep calm and you will do just fine.
Situated in South London, the Mitcham center is surrounded by many residential roads.
Narrow Residential Roads
You will spend a considerable amount of time during your semi-intensive driving lessons in Mitcham on residential roads. There are many residential roads in the area which can cause a problem with meeting oncoming vehicles and also getting close to parked cars. Whatever the situation, the DTC driving instructor will teach you to use the MSM routine.
During your practical test, as soon as you see an oncoming vehicle approaching, the first thing you must do is to check the rear view mirror. After this, it would be advisable to slightly ease off the accelerator pedal as this will allow you time to think and decide. Bear in mind that the driving test at Mitcham is based on safety before anything else. Therefore, if you have any doubt about whether to proceed or to stop, it would be advisable to take the side of caution and stop. During the independent driving section, you could find yourself on the busy A23 or the A232.
Faded road markings There are a few residential roads with faded road markings that are still visible but you do need to be actively looking out for them. These include give-way lines at small crossroads.
ONE WAY ROADS
There are a few one-way roads on the Mitcham driving test route. Many learner drivers have been known to fail at Mitcham because they were not aware that they were on a one-way system. Therefore watching road signs and road marking are vital in order to pass your driving test at Mitcham. At the entrance to a one-way road, there will be a blue rectangular sign with a white arrow. Please note that this is different from a head-only sign which is a blue circle with an arrow.
