Mill Hill is within the the London Borough of Barnet, in England, Mill Hill was in the historic county of Middlesex until 1965; since then it had become part of Greater London and is situated 9 miles northwest of Charing Cross. This town is made up of several distinct parts, originally it was known as Mill Hill Village, which later changed to Mill Hill Broadway (this is now the main hub of the area) – and now is known as Mill Hill East alongside large areas of countryside.
In 1547, the areas name was Myllehill and it means ‘hill with a windmill’ – this is where Mill Hill got its name from. The original workings of the original Mill are in the buildings which are next door to The Mill Field. Mill Hill was part of Hendon within the historic county boundaries of Middlesex. It was part of Muincipal Borough of Hendon and was then merged into the London Borough of Barnet in Greater London in 1965.
Are you curious on how other people perform on their driving tests? Luckily the DVSA release pass rate quite frequently, so we can give you information on what we know. For starters, those in the UK have a 45.9% chance of passing their driving test. This decreases to 40.8% for those located in London. As for those taking their test at Mill Hill test center. See the table below for the pass rates in Mill Hill for the last five years.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
43.1% | 41.4% | 43.2% | 43.1% | 47.5% |
Overall, Mill Hill’s pass rates are not bad, they are on the good side as they’re higher than London’s pass rates, but they’re not that much lower than the national average. Do not let these pass rates get to you, as your driving test’s outcome depends on your ability.
The Mill Hill practical Test Center has a car park with a narrow entrance/exit. Many learners fail their test at this center because they position wrongly when exiting the test center. As Mill Hill is situated on the edge of North London, you should expect to deal with country lanes as well as town driving.
Narrow Residential Roads
You will spend a considerable amount of time during your semi-intensive driving lessons in Mill Hill on residential roads. There are many residential roads in the area which can cause a problem with meeting oncoming vehicles and also getting close to parked cars. Whatever the situation, the DTC driving instructor will teach you to use the MSM routine.
During your practical test, as soon as you see an oncoming vehicle approaching, the first thing you must do is to check the rear view mirror. After this, it would be advisable to slightly ease off the accelerator pedal as this will allow you time to think and decide. Remember that the driving test at Mill Hill is based on safety before anything else. Therefore, if you have any doubt about whether to proceed or to stop, it would be advisable to take the side of caution and stop.
Winding Country Lanes – Country lanes are pretty and seem like an easy drive, however, they have their own dangers; often hidden. You may come across vehicles that you would not normally see when you are driving in town such as tractors. You may encounter horses, sheep, and cattle. Furthermore, country lanes are not as well maintained as are the city roads and you may find large potholes. Hitting a pot-pole at high speed can be extremely dangerous.
Although the national speed limit on county lanes is 60 mph, you must remember that all speed limits are limits and not targets to be met. The examiner will expect you to drive at a speed at which you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
