Markfield is a large village within both the National Forest and the Charnwood Forest, as well as in the Hinkley and Bosworth districts of Leicestershire, England. The settlement dates from at least the time of the Norman Conquest, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Merchenefeld. A variation of this is still used as the name for the villages primary school, Merchenfeld.

It is south-east of Junction 22 on the M1 and to the south of the A50. The highest point at Markfield is shown on OS Sheet 129, which is at an elevation of 222 metres. Nearby places are Newtown Linford, Groby, Field Head and Stanton Under Bardon.

In the 1841 census, it was recorded as having 1,203 inhabitants. In the 2011 census, the ward had a population of 5,681.

Markfield is in the postcode area LE67. In 2012, Hinkley and Bosworth borough council published a review of the conservation areas in Markfield. Markfield is shown in Domesday book published in 1070 as having 2 small households.

Ulf is shown as lord of Markfield, Groveby Blaby, and Ratby, all within the borough of Guthlaxton, Leicestershire, in 1066. By 1086, this had increased fivefold to a value of pound sterling, with the lord being Hugh of Granmesnil, who was also connected with the boroughs of Goscote, Guthlaxton and Gartree in Leicestershire.

Markfield had strong links to the Methodist movement, with 13 visits from its founder, John Wesley, according to the churchs Blue Plaque. He was allowed to preach at the parish church because he was friendly with the vicar, but crowds became so big that he would often give sermons on the village green.

The parish church, St Michaels and All Angels, is a Grade II listed building. There are two other churches, Holy Trinity Methodist Chapel and Congregational Church, but the original Methodist Chapel (the Temperance Hall) is no longer used.
