Luton is situated in south-east England and is both a town and borough in the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire; at the same time it is also the most popular town in Bedfordshire. The town is situated by a River, called River Lea, which is about 30 miles north-north of West London. Dating back to the sixth century as a Saxon Outpost on The River Lea is where Luton got its original name from.
In 1905 car production began at a plant in Luton, where it also had a large Vauxhall Motor’s factory and at the same time was famous for hat-making. This continued for many years and the plant then closed in 2002; however, the production of commercial vehicles continued due to Vauxhall Motors Head Office being in the town for many many years. This had then relocated in 2019 in the village of Chalton, Befordshire (this is on the northern border of the Borough of London).
There is a lot of transport in Luton too, where most of the transport is provided by London Luton Airport, which is known as one of Britain’s major airports which opened in 1938 – with three railway stations also in the town.
We can confidently say that when you started to learn to drive, your friends and family did let you know how their driving test went. On a general note, learners in the UK have a 45.9% chance of passing. So are you wanting to know the driving pass rate in Luton, if so look at the pass rates below for the last five years.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
39.1% | 38.3% | 33.5% | 34.9% | 36.4% |
It is easy to say why you’re not impressed with the pass rates – after all, they have been below the national average for the last five years. However, it is located in a busy town center which can be hectic during rush hour. ALWAYS REMEMBER, that it is your own performance on the day that decides the outcome of your test. Do not focus on pass rates but focus on yourself.
Luton is relatively a small town. The center itself is very closely situated to the A505 dual carriageway which joins onto other dual carriageways through the aid of large multi-lane roundabouts. Luton joins up with neighboring towns through these dual carriageways and also country lanes. You should expect a variety of roads, especially during the independent driving sections.
Document Checks
On the day of the driving test, It’s important that you take your provisional driving licence to the test as the examiner will need to check that it is valid. You will not need to take your theory certificate as the examiner will be able to check it on the system. Luton driving test occasionally starts at 7.13 am when the examiner may not have access to the checking system. It is therefore advisable to have your certificate number just in case.
You will be required to bring a car for the test which is insured for you to drive and have a valid MOT if the vehicle is over three years old. The examiner will not ask you to see any paperwork relating to insurance or MOT as they will be able to check this electronically. If you require an emergency car hire for your driving test, accompanied by a qualified driving instructor, DTC UK can arrange this for you.
Independent Drive
The independent drive takes up half of the driving test at Luton. It is not an opportunity for you to program the sat nav for the beach, put on the cruise control, and head off wherever you like. The examiner can ask you to follow road signs and road markings to a set destination or ask you to follow directions given by a satnav.
The independent drive is a bit different from normal driving. Let’s say you’re doing a semi-intensive crash course with DTC, your instructor will say, “at the roundabout, turn right.” Immediately, you know that you are approaching a roundabout. You also know that you need to start the MSM routine. However, in the independent driving section of the practical test, you will need to identify that you are approaching a roundabout and then you need to decide when to start the Mirror, Signal & Manoeuvre routine.
If you’re unsure as to where you are going, you can ask the examiner. The driving examiners at Luton will not mind and will willingly help you. This is because they know that you have identified the roundabout in good time and want to start the MSM routine. Having said this, if you reached the roundabout and then asked the examiner which direction you were going, they would not help you because, at that point, you may already be in the wrong position to turn where the examiner wanted you to go.
