Luton is a city and constituency, which has unitary status, within the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire; it is located in South-East England, but is grouped within the region of East Anglia for administrative purposes. At the 2011 census, Luton built-up area sub-district had a population of 211,228 people, while its built-up area, including neighbouring towns Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had 258,018 people. It is the most populous city in Bedfordshire.
The town is situated on the River Lea, approximately 30 miles (50 km) north-north-west of London. The towns founding dates from the 6th century, when it was founded as a Saxon outpost on the Lea, which is where Luton takes its name. Luton is recorded in the Domesday Book as Loitone and Lintone, and St. Marys church, one of Bedfordshires largest churches, was built in the 12th century. There are local museums exploring the history of Luton at Wardown Park and Stockwood Park.
Luton has been known for its bonnet making for many years, as well as having a large Vauxhall Motors plant. Car production at the factory began in 1905 and continued until the factory closed in 2002.
Transport was provided by London Luton airport, which opened in 1938 and is today one of Britains main airports, and the city is served by three rail stations. The University of Bedfordshire was formed through the merger of Luton University; two of its campuses are located in Luton.
Luton Town FC, nicknamed The Hatters because of the towns hat-making connections, has had a number of spells in the English Championships top flight, and won the Football League Cup in 1988. They play at Kenilworth Road, their home since 1905; planning permission was granted in 2019 for a new, larger stadium. The Luton International Carnival, Europes largest one-day carnival, is held on the day before the final Monday of May; Saint Patricks Festival is held the weekend closest to St Patricks Day, due to the fact that Luton has a significant Irish community. The city also has a large Pakistani community, who, alongside Irish people, are drawn by jobs in the Vauxhall Car Plant.
