Lowesby is a small parish and a hamlet situated within Harborough district of Leicestershire. It is eight miles east of the county seat, Leicester, and ninety miles north of London. Lowesby Parish is located 500 metres above sea level, in a region that is relatively hilly. Other than the Queniborough Brook, Lowesby has no other sites of high interest, partly because of intensive agriculture in the area. Local agriculture was probably affected by the geology of the area, which is mainly Lower Jurassic Mudstones with some lesser Carbonates.
Lowesby Hall was first owned by Richard Wallaston in the mid-17th century, and remained in his family until Anne Wallaston married into the Fowke family, whose hands the Hall remained in until well into the 20th century. It is now privately owned.
The Rutland-Melton area, including Lowersby, is represented by Alison Kerns (Conservative), who has held the seat since 2019. The councillor for Harborough is Michael Rowe (Conservative), who was elected in May 2007.
The district councillor for Loweresby is Simon Galton (Liberal Democrat). The name Lowesby is from Old Norse, thought to mean a Lausi farmhouse or settlement, which relates to the proprietors and later use of the land. The Lowesby manor is recorded in Domesday Book of 1086 as having contained two plough teams, consisting of five men each. The manor was held from the countess Judith, the granddaughter of William the Conqueror, by a Norman named Hugh Bourdet (or Bourdet/Bordet), who was from Couilly in Normandy, who made Lowesby his seat for many generations.
