From the 1900s to 1933, Loughton was an Urban District Council, based at a newly constructed Town Hall next to the Lopping Hall. After that, it became part of Chigwell Urban District only until 1974 – this was when Epping Forest District Council was created. Loughton is a civil parish in the Epping Forest District of Essex and it 21km north east of Charing Cross London.

Loughton used to be a small village; it became an important stopping point after Loughton’s population grew in the 17th century. It only became an important stopping point during coach journeys between Loughton and Cambridge. This enabled Londoners to take short trips to Epping Forest after the introduction of the Railway in the 1800s. Essex town soon became popular as a tourist hotspot.

Loughton is now known for its residential appeal and has been attracting families and those looking for a slower pace of life. It offered easy access to the M25 and the M11 for a quick escape route to the North.

So your here to see the pass rates, as they interest you – so we have put together the total pass rates for the all London Test centers. The overall pass rate in the UK stands at 45.9%. The others who are based in he East of England, in comparison have a 46.3% of passing.  See the table below for the pass rates in Loughton.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
45.8% 45.5% 45.3% 45.0% 44.0%

Overall, Loughton pass rates haven’t been that bad in the last couple years, it has stayed over 44%. This is lower than the national average, but not by too much. It is very important that you focus too much on these rates – as they do not mean anything when it comes to passing the test. Just keep practicing, as the outcome of the test depends on you.

Loughton is situated on the edge of North-East London, you can expect to find a combination of urban and rural roads. The center itself is on the High Street where you can expect to find several pedestrian crossings.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
There are several pedestrian crossings in the Loughton area. People have been known to fail their tests for technical knowledge of the crossing rather than driving itself. This is why part of the intensive driving lessons in Loughton will ensure that you understand fully not only how to deal with pedestrian crossings but how to deal with pedestrians in general.

It is important to note that a zebra crossing running across the road without a break in it is counted as one crossing. The driver must wait until the pedestrian is completely off the road. However, a zebra crossing with a break, due to a central reservation in the middle, is counted as two completely separate crossings. Therefore, if the pedestrian has safely crossed your side of the road and is on the central reservation, you as a driver may proceed.  On the Loughton driving test route, if you encounter a traffic light crossing, it could be either a pelican crossing or the puffin crossing.

At a pelican crossing the light will change from red to flashing amber which means that a driver must wait for any pedestrian to cross the road. However, if there are no pedestrians on the road, the driver should proceed through the flashing amber lights. On a puffin crossing, there is no flashing amber. Instead, after red, the light will change to red and amber together before changing to green. The red and amber light together means that you must wait for the green light before proceeding.

Unlike a zebra crossing, if a light-controlled crossing has a central reservation in the middle, it is still counted as one crossing and the driver must wait until the pedestrian is full of the road. The only time a light-controlled crossing is treated as two separate crossings is if it has a central reservation that is “staggered”

Winding Country Lanes
Country lanes seem pretty and like an easy drive. However, they often have hidden. You may come across vehicles that you would not normally see when you are driving in town such as tractors. You may encounter horses, sheep, and cattle. Furthermore, country lanes are not as well maintained as are the city roads and you may find large potholes. Hitting a pot-pole at high speed can be extremely dangerous.

Although the national speed limit on county lanes is 60 mph, you must remember that all speed limits are limits and not targets to be met. The examiner will expect you to drive at a speed at which you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
