Loughborough is a market town in Charnwood borough of Leicestershire, England, the seat of Charnwood district council and of Loughborough University. At the 2011 census, the towns built-up area had a population of 59,932, second largest in the borough behind Leicester. It is near the Nottinghamshire boundary, with easy access to Leicester, Nottingham, East Midlands Airport, and Derby. It has the largest bell-foundry in the world, John Taylor Bellfounders, who produce the bells of the war memorial carillon, the landmark Queens Park bell tower in the town, of Great Paulet, for St Pauls Cathedral, and for York Minster.

The first signs of industrialisation in the area came at the turn of the 19th century, when John Heathcoat, an inventor in Derbyshire, in 1809 patented a refinement of the warp-loom known as a twist-lace machine, allowing the production of gloves that had the look and feel of lace. Heathcoat, working in partnership with Nottingham-based maker Charles Lachie, moved his operation from there to Hathern, a village outside Loughborough. The products of this “Loughborough machine” became known as English nets, or bobbins.

However, in 1816, Luddites, believed to have been paid by competitors from Nottingham, attacked the factory, destroying 55 frames. This caused Heathcoat to relocate his operation to an abandoned woollen mill at Tiverton, Devon.

In 1888, an incorporation charter was obtained, which allowed for the election of a mayor and a company. The population increased from 11,000 to 25,000 over the next ten years.

Among factories established were John Taylor and Co, the bell-making plant of Robert Taylor, and Falcon Works, which produced steam locomotives, later automobiles, until they were taken over by Brush Electric Machines. In 1897 Herbert Morris established a factory at the Empress Works on Moor Lane, which became one of the leading manufacturers of cranes in the middle of the 20th century. There was also a lot of public investment: the new sewerage works in 1895, followed by a waterworks at Blackbrook, and the bridge street power station in 1899. The Corporation took over Loughborough Gas Company in 1900.
