Kearsley is a town in Bolton Metropolitan Borough, Greater Manchester, England. The population was 14,212 at the 2011 census. Historically a part of Lancashire, it is eight miles (13 km) north-west of Manchester, five miles (8 km) southwest of Bury, and three-and-a-half miles (6 km) south of Bolton. It is bordered by Walkden in the west, Whitefield in the east, Farnworth in the north and Clifton in the south. Kearsley is a borough within the Ancient Ecclesiastical Parish of Deane, within the shire of Salford.
The township of Kearsley was the local authority from 1894 to 1974. In 1933, parts of Clifton were added to the Kearsley Urban District. Part of Outwood, Radcliffe became part of Kearsley, following the 1933 Lancashire Survey.
Kearsley lies within Lancashires historical county boundaries, and was industrialised in 1752, when James Brindley solved the drainage problems of a wet-earth colliery at the boundary between Kearsley and Clifton. “Kearsley, a borough within Deane Parish, in Salford Hundred, seven miles north-west. In this township is the Moor of Kersley, a vast common, beneath which are numerous prize mines”.
In the industrial revolution, within its boundaries were paper mills, cotton mills, chemical works, an iron foundry, quarries, and 15 coal pits. In the mid-19th century, the region was a heavily mined area for coal.
Several street names, such as Moss Colliery Road (in neighbouring Clifton), are evidence of this. The largest colliery was Unity Brook Colliery. On March 12, 1878, 43 men and boys died and 19 were buried in a parish church after a blast in the mine.
By 1900, the coal-mining industry had almost disappeared. In the late 1920s, Kearsley Coal Power Station was built.
It used water from the River Irwell to cool it. The plant closed on 12 May 1985, having been demolished. The power station had a rail link, which was removed, and is now a footpath.
