Heather is a village just west of Ibstock, North West Leicestershire, England.
The civil parish had a population of 949 in the 2001 census, which was reduced to 920 at the 2011 census.
In the Domesday Book 1086, its name is recorded as Hadre, meaning “heathland”. There was an Iron Age settlement just to the north-west of the village. As part of the opencast coal application, it was excavated in 1990. It identified settlements from the late second century BCE through early second century CE.
The village name means Heathland. The parish church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, was “founded” as a chapel in the twelfth century by Knights Hospitallers from an adjoining preceptory, the “Heathland Priory”, founded prior to 1199. The present church dates to the early 14th century, and is a Grade II* listed building.
The coal pit in Heather opened in 1874, although there was some coal working even before that. Brick making followed during the 20th century. Two massive opencast coal mines were opened during the 1970s and 80s.
The Coalville Farm opencast mine, from 1982 until 1996, produced about eight million tons of coal. The site was later restored as Sence Valley Country Park. Following a 1990 British Coal application to undertake massive additional opencast mining, its successor company, British Coal, applied for consent to undertake much smaller schemes. To the north of the village, this was called Long Moor Open Cast Coal Mine.
Over the period of three years, 2007-2010, they extracted 725,000 tonnes of coal. After being restored, the mine site, which is 76 ha (190 acres), was purchased by The Woodland Trust. With adjacent farmland, it was promoted as a flagship diamondwood for their 60-acre-plus New Woodlands Campaign. It is a 186-hectare (460 acres) new wood called the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood, commemorating Queen Elizabeth IIs Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
