Hayes is a very well known area in West London and is historically situated in the county of Middlesex. It is a town based in West London and is now part of The London Borough of Hillingdon. Hayes is local to Hayes End, Harlington and Yeading and is situated 21km West of Charing Cross and 10.5km from Southall. A very well known canal known as The Grand Union Canal flows through the heart of Hayes and accompanies The Great Western Main Line. Hayes is also well known for their residential areas and country parks.

Did you know Hayes is formed of five different separate villages which are Botwell, Hayes Town, Hayes End, Wood End and Yeading. The name Hayes Town has come from the area around Station Road between Coldharbour Lane and Hayes and Harlington Railway Station.

One author George Orwell, adopted his pseudonym while living in Hayes. He worked and lived as a headteacher as The Hawthorns High School for boys – this is situated on Church Road. This school has now closed and is now known as The Fountain House Hotel. The hotel bears a plaque commemorating its distinguished former resident.

Recently, Hayes test center has been coming out with higher pass rates that average for London.

But do not focus on the pass rates, as everything depends ones skills and abilities.

The Hayes DVSA driving test canter is permanently closed. Driving in Hayes, you will encounter several roundabouts both large multilane roundabouts and mini-roundabouts. Many learner drivers get nervous at the sight of these large roundabouts. However, they are easier than they seem. Many are traffic light controlled which means that you do not have to worry about giving way to the right and deciding when to go and when to go.

Mini roundabouts
You will cover several mini-roundabouts while doing your intensive driving course in Hayes.  They often replace T-junctions in quieter residential areas to ease the flow of traffic. The rules at mini-roundabouts are the same as normal roundabouts. However, bear in mind that you would not need the “exit” signal when leaving the roundabout to follow the road, and you would not need the exit signal when turning right. Furthermore, it needs to be mentioned that although you need only give way to traffic on the right and have priority over traffic on the left, priority must be given and not taken.

Pedestrian Crossings
You will also have pedestrian crossings in the Hayes area. People have been known to fail their tests for technical knowledge of the crossing rather than driving itself. This is why part of the intensive driving lessons in Hayes will ensure that you understand fully not only how to deal with pedestrian crossings but how to deal with pedestrians in general.

It is important to note that a zebra crossing running across the road without a break in it is counted as one crossing. The driver must wait until the pedestrian is completely off the road. However, a zebra crossing with a break, due to a central reservation in the middle, is counted as two completely separate crossings. Therefore, if the pedestrian has safely crossed your side of the road and is on the central reservation, you as a driver may proceed.

During your intensive driving lessons in Hayes, if you encounter a traffic light crossing, it could be either a pelican crossing or the puffin crossing.

At a pelican crossing the light will change from red to flashing amber which means that a driver must wait for any pedestrian to cross the road. However, if there are no pedestrians on the road, the driver should proceed through the flashing amber lights. On a puffin crossing, there is no flashing amber. Instead, after red, the light will change to red and amber together before changing to green. The red and amber light together means that you must wait for the green light before proceeding.

Unlike a zebra crossing, if a light-controlled crossing has a central reservation in the middle, it is still counted as one crossing and the driver must wait until the pedestrian is full of the road. The only time a light-controlled crossing is treated as two separate crossings is if it has a central reservation that is “staggered”
