Guildford is situated southwest of London , adjoining The River Thames. Heathrow and Gatwick airport are within easy reach of Guildford. In the Saxon times, Guildford was known as a manor. It is full of many historic buildings such as The Norman Castle, it’s earlier known dates are known from 1257.
In the 16th century, sheep raising and cloth trade were important activities which were growing in Guildford , Godalming and Farnham. At the same time, market gardens also became important in the North and the West. Until the 19th century, The Forested Hill increased in population, and at the time, served two main purposes; one was as a hunting preserve (for example Henry VIII built a glamorous hunting lodge at Nonsuch Park) and second was as a source of timber for charcoal (this was used in iron smelting and gunpowder production), construction and shipbuilding.
The transport of these products were dependent on rivers which was made easier after the 1800s, by the construction of railways. The Surrey Iron Railway from Wandsworth to Merstham, worked by horses, was the first public railway sanctioned by the British Parliament in 1801.
If your similar to many other learner drivers , you must be eager to know how others do on their driving tests. The national average pass rate in the UK is 45.9% and for those in London, this is lower at 40.8%. As for the pass rates at Guildford, please see the table below.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
46.4% | 54.0% | 52.7% | 48.6% | 50.2% |
In comparison, with other test centers in Surrey, Guildford has no comparison, this is because their pass rates have been above average for the past five years! Sometimes, it can take more than one try to pass a driving test, so do not focus much on the pass rates!
Car Parks
There is a car park at Guildford practical test center – this means that the examiner may ask you to carry out the bay park manoeuvre at the test center itself. They usually request this, at the start of or at the very end of the test. The examiner can ask you to reverse into a bay of your choice or you may be asked to drive forward into a bay and then reverse out of it. You will be taught the bay park manoeuvre in various public car parks during your semi intensive driving lessons at Guildford.
Please remember that just because Guildford test center has a car park, the examiner does not have to request the reverse manoeuvre at the Center. You could also be asked to carry out the parallel park between two cars on a public road or asked to stop on the right-hand side of a road and then reverse back.
Independent Drive
Half of your driving test is taken up by independent driving. You may be asked to follow road signs, and road markings to a set destination or ask to follow directions given by a satnav.
Independent driving is different to normal driving. Let’s give you an example on what you may be doing on your semi intensive crash course with DTC. Your instructor will say, “at the roundabout, turn right.” Immediately, you know that you are approaching a roundabout. You also know that you need to start the MSM routine.
When you are driving and you are in the independent driving section of the driving
However, in the independent driving section of the practical test, you will need to identify that you are approaching a roundabout and then you need to decide when to start the Mirror, Signal & Manoeuvre routine.
If you’re unsure as to where you are going, you can ask the examiner. The driving examiners at Guildford will not mind and will willingly help you. This is because they know that you have identified the roundabout in good time and want to start the MSM routine. Having said this, if you reached the roundabout and then asked the examiner which direction you were going, they would not help you because, at that point, you may already be in the wrong position to turn where the examiner wanted you to go.
ONE WAY ROADS
There are one way-roads in Guildford and many learner drivers have been known to fail at because they were not aware that they were on a one-way system. Therefore watching road signs and road marking are vital in order to pass your driving test at Guilford At the entrance to a one-way road, there will be a blue rectangular sign with a white arrow. Please note that this is different from a head-only sign which is a blue circle with an arrow.

Dual Carriageways
There are some dual carriageways such as the A3 that the examiner may take you on. If on a dual carriageway, it is important to remember that you should always stay in the left-hand lane unless overtaking or turning right.
Winding Country Lanes
People think country lanes are easy to drive but they are not aware of their own dangers which are often hidden. You may come across vehicles that you are not used to seeing such as tractors.
You may meet horses, sheep, and cattle. Furthermore, country lanes are not as well maintained as are the city roads and you may find large potholes. Hitting a pot-pole at high speed can be extremely dangerous.
Although the national speed limit on county lanes is 60 mph, you must remember that all speed limits are limits and not targets to be met. The examiner will expect you to drive at a speed at which you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
Narrow Residential Roads
You may be spending a lot of time on residential roads during your semi intensive driving course. There are a lot of residential roads in Guildford and they tend to cause problems with meeting vehicles on the test and also getting closer to parked cars. Whatever the situation, the DTC driving instructor will teach you to use the MSM routine.
If you see an oncoming vehicle approaching, the first thing you must do is to check the rear view mirror. After this, it would be advisable to slightly ease off the accelerator pedal as this will allow you time to think and decide. Bear in mind that the driving test at Guildford is based on safety before anything else. Therefore, if you have any doubt about whether to proceed or to stop, it would be advisable to take the side of caution and stop.
