Greenwich is a city in south-east London, located within both the historic County of Kent and ceremonial County of Greater London. It is situated 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east-southeast of Charing Cross. Greenwich is famous for its maritime history, and is named after Greenwich Meridian (and Greenwich Mean Time). The city became home to the Royal Palace, Placentia, beginning in the 15th century, and was the birthplace of several Tudors, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

The palace fell into disrepair during the English Civil War, and was demolished in favour of a Royal Naval Hospital for sailors, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and his assistant, Nicholas Hawksmoor. These buildings became the Royal Naval College in 1873, remaining an institution of military training until 1998, when it passed into the hands of the Greenwich Foundation. The historical rooms in these buildings are still open to the public; the other buildings are used by the University of Greenwich and the Trinity Laban Conservatory of Music and Dance.

The town became a popular spa town during the eighteenth century, with a number of large houses built there, such as the Castle Vanbrugh (1717), which was built on the Mase Hill, near the grounds. From the Georgian period, housing estates were built on top of the town centre.

Greenwichs nautical connections were celebrated in the 20th century, with the emplacements of Cutty Sark and Gipsy Moth IV near the riverfront, and in 1934, the National Museum of Marine Affairs was established in the former site of the Royal Hospital School. Historically a small parish within Blackheath Hundred, Kent, the town formed part of Londons growing urban area during the 19th century. When the Borough of London, an administrative district designed to supersede the Metropolitan Board of Works, was formed in 1889, the parish was combined with Charlton-next-Woolwich, Deptford St Nicholas, and Kidbrooke to create the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich. When Londons local government was again reformed in 1965, it merged with much of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich, creating what is today the Royal Borough of Greenwich, a borough within Greater Londons Local Authority.
