Greenford is a large suburb in the north of the Ealing Borough and has a population of 62,126 – this includes the population of Perivale. Greenford is 18km west of Charing Cross and is a suburb based within The London Borough of Ealing in West London. The underground trains are near Greenford and depart and are served by Greenford Station – this is The London Underground Central Line and the Greenford branch of The Great Western Railway Mainline Service.

There are many nearby places such as Yeading, Hanwell, Perivale, Southall, Northolt, Ealing, Sudbury and Sudbury Hill. Did you know the name Greenford came from old english words which were ‘grene’ and ‘ford’ – this literally means ‘place at the green ford’. It used to be known as Great Greenford and Perivale was known as Little Greenford; in order to deffrentiate these two terms from each other the names were changed from Great Greenford to just Greenford and Little Greenford to Perivale. By doing this it made it easier to distinguish the two. Although these are now two different places, then share the same postcode which is the UB6 postal code.

It is understandable why learner drivers like to know the pass rates in the area in which they are due to take their test. However, it is not only the learner drivers who are interested in this, the examiners and the instructors are too. You know how it is, if they pass, they’re above the norm and they can brag about passing, and if they don’t well that’s a different story. Did you know that the pass rate in Greater London, is lower than the actual average in the UK. The average pass rate in the UK stands at 45.9% and in Greater London it stands at 40.8%. As for Greenford, please see their pass rates below.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
40.6% 41.7% 38.9% 37.6% 39.5%

Overall, Greenford tends to stick at or between the same pass rates, this is neither good nor bad, but it does seem to stick close to the average pass rate of Greater London itself. Are you still worried about passing your test, you can ask your instructor to do a Mock Test with you, and go on a difficult route, so you get the gist of things. Do not focus too much on pass rates, focus on your self and your own ability as that is the only thing that will help you pass your test.

The Emergency Stop

Learning the emergency stop is an important part of your intensive driving lessons in Greenford. However, in the actual practical test only one in three candidates will be asked to carry out the emergency stop.

The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that you can stop suddenly but safely. The examiner will tell you a few minutes in advance that you will be caring out the emergency stop. That words used by the examiner will be, “ ‘Shortly, I shall ask you to carry out an emergency stop. I will raise my right hand as a signal and shout, Stop. When I shout Stop, I would like you to stop promptly as if a child had stepped in front of you.”

You need to drive normally before the emergency stop. Do not accelerate suddenly to build up a good speed and on the other hand, do not purposely drive slow in anticipation of the emergency stop. Many learner drivers who fail on this exercise often do so out of fear, driving slow believing it would be easier, or failing to make proper observations after the emergency stop.

Dual Carriageways

As Greenford is situated in West London – there is a possibility that you can be taken on the A40 dual carriageway. If on a dual carriageway, it is important to remember that you should always stay in the left-hand lane unless overtaking or turning right.

Car Park

There is no car parks in Greenford; however, bay parking maneuverers can be asked to be carried out at any public car park, eg The Westway Cross Retail Park.

School

The “Horsenden Primary School” is close to the test center which can,  if you test at the beginning of the end of the school day, cause issues with meeting vehicles.

Faded road markings

There are a few residential roads with faded road markings that are still visible but you do need to be actively looking out for them. These include give-way lines at small crossroads.
