Leicester Forest East is a large commuter village in the English county of Leicester, just west of Leicester, which is located on the M1 motorway. It is part of the district of Blaby. Leicester Forest East is a popular place for commuters and younger families.
It was developed mostly between 1920 and 1985, with large developments built alongside the Hinkley Road (A47) and to the south-east of the M1 during the 1930s. Large-scale residential developments took place during the 1960s, north-east and west of the M1 motorway. In the 1980s, a large housing development was built on the western edge of the settlement.
The village takes its name from the old Forest of Leicester. The roads running along a housing estate to the north-east of the M1 are named after Anne Packer and Robbie Brightwell, Olympic gold medallists at the 1964 games in Tokyo.
There are local retail facilities on the east side of the development, including a newsagents, a post office, bank, small Co-op supermarket, and cashpoint. There are also a number of local shops on the Hinkley Road, which approaches the western end of the community, including a small Sainsburys, a chip shop, three hairdressing salons, and a service garage (the latter stopped serving petrol in the 1990s, continuing as only a maintenance and repair station until around 2013, when it closed completely). A new public library, managed by the community, is located near Stafford Leys primary school, the old library is now a dog grooming service.
There are two health centres at the east end of Leicester Forest, one on the east end with a GP, a pharmacy and dentist, and the other at the west end (Warren Lane) with similar facilities, all run by the same GP. There is a veterinary surgery on Hinkley Road, near Elliott Drive. There are two hotels in the East Leicester Forest, both of which are located off the A47.
The Forest Park Inn is a newly renovated motel for families, and has outside patio seating. The other is a much older facility called The Red Cow (which is, strictly speaking, located on Kirby-Muxloe). Both serve food and provide lodging.
The parish hall is located at Kings Drive, across from the playing fields/park. A new playing park was installed at the beginning of 2009.
Recently, the parish hall has been home to Clubszone, a local provider of kids activities, which runs during the school holidays. They also run the Community Cinema, running the first Thursday night of each month, 7.30pm (except in July/August).
There are three Christian places of worship: St Andrews, ecumenical with congregations from Anglicans and Methodists. Also, there is a local Cub and Scout troop behind the church (92nd Leicester Forest East). There is a Jehovahs Witness meetinghouse on Hinkley Road. There is also the nearby Forest Chapel, which runs a preschool and a nursery (Forest Chapel Nursery).
