Farsley is a small town within the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Leeds, in the English region of West Yorkshire, six miles (9.7 km) west of the city centre of Leeds and four miles (6.4 km) east of Bradford. Farsley lies between these two cities, near the city of Pudsey. Before April 1974, Farsley was part of Pudsey borough.
Before 1934, it was its own Urban District Council. It had its own council offices across from the Cenotaph, now a dentists surgery.
The wards of Calverley and Farsley also included Swinnow Manor and parts of north Pudsey. During the Industrial Revolution, Farsley was the centre for wool-processing, with the district having many mills. Sunnybank Mills, which is still owned by the Gaunt family, is now part of an enormous, multimillion-pound regeneration project, which is leading to new appreciation for the heritage of Farsleys mills. Farsley is off the main route between Leeds and Bradford, just off the A6110 Leeds Outer Ring Road.
New Pudsey railway station is between Farsley and Pudsey, providing rail services to Leeds, Bradford, Manchester Victoria and Blackpool. The name Farsley was first recorded in Domesday Book of 1086 as Feredely and Feredelya. The second element of the name comes from the Old English word leah (open ground in the woods). The etymology of the first element is less certain, but is thought either to be Old English fyrs (gorse) or a hypothetical *fers (heifer). The name therefore originally meant either an empty field, characterised by bushes of sage, or by pastured cattle.
