The name Farnborough comes from another word known as Fearnbiorginga – this means a village among the ferns on the hill. Farnborough is situated south of Locks bottom, west of Green Street Green, north of Downe & Hazelwood and east of Keston; it is 13.4 miles southeast from Charing cross. Farnborough is in south-eastern Greater London and is located in the old style county of Kent.
After the Second World War Farnborough started to connect to the conurbation of London and formed part of The London Borough of Bromley. The area also started to fill up with High Street filled housing, but the green-belt legislation prevented them from building any more houses further south. One of the developments which was included was Darrick Wood, which is know known as Keniston Housing Association. They are the largest estate in Farnborough town with around 360 houses and flats, and shared accommodation for the elderly.
The vast majority of residents within Farnborough are above average white elderly people with a very small amount of minority ethnic groups in primary school learning the early stages of English.
Learner drivers don’t just obsess over driving test routes, they also obsess with driving pass rates. Obviously everyone would want to know what their chances are for passing. On average, learner drivers in the UK have a pass rate of 45.9%. From a positive aspect, if your taking your driving test at Farnborough, you’ll find that your chances of passing are higher. Farnborough is one of the highest passing test centers in London – please see the table below.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
55.2% | 54.3% | 58.4% | 54.0% | 51.4% |
So, as you can see, Farnborough has a well over average pass rates – so that instantly makes a learner driver more motivated. Never forget your success in your driving test hugely depends on your personal performance on the day of your practical.
20 mph Zones
During your driving lessons or even your driving test at Farnborough you will come across several 20 mph roads. Many of these have recently had their speed reduced from 30 mph to 20 mph. Bear in mind that a satnav may display the old speed if it has not been updated.
Car Park
Farnborough has a car park – this means that the examiner may ask you to carry out the bay park manoeuvere at the center itself. This can be requested at the start or at the very end of the test. The examiner can ask you to reverse into a bay of your choice or you may be asked to drive forward into a bay and then reverse out of it. Your driving instructor will be teaching you how to pay park in various public car parks (we include it all in our crash courses)
Winding Country Lanes
Overall, country lanes seem like an easy drive an easy drive, however, they do often have hidden dangers. You come across vehicles that you have not seen before such a tractor’s and animals too such as horses, sheep and cattle. Also, county lanes are not that well maintained than city roads, which means you do find large potholes. Hitting a pothole at high speed can be very dangerous. The speed limit on country lanes is 60mph; you need to remember all speed limits are limits and do not take them as targets that you need to meet. The examiner will expect you to drive at a speed at which you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
Dual Carriageways
The examiner will take you on dual carriageways on your test. Many driving test center are situated on the edge of towns and cities. They are located in such areas so to provide as much diverse road types during a driving test as possible. Included in these road types are often dual carriageways.
Mini roundabouts
On Farnborough’s driving test route, there are a number of mini roundabouts – the mini roundabouts are usually there to replace T-Junctions in quieter residential areas as they ease the flow of traffic. Normal roundabout and mini roundabouts have different rules – however do remember that you would ‘NOT’ need the exit signal when leaving the roundabout to follow the road and you would also not need it when turning right. Furthermore, it needs to be mentioned that although you need only give way to traffic on the right and have priority over traffic on the left, priority must be given and not taken.
