Failsworth is a town in Oldham Metropolitan Borough, Greater Manchester, England, located 3.7 miles (6.0 km) north-east of Manchester City Centre, and 2.9 miles (4.7 km) south-west of Oldham.
The orbital M60 motorway runs around it in an easterly direction.
The population was 20 in the 2011 census, Failsworth was historically a farming township in Lancashire, and was linked to Manchester by church and state in the 19th century. Residents supplemented farming incomes with home-grown, hand-loomed cloth. The wet climate and abundance of labor and coal led to the textile industry, which was established as the mill town of Lancashire, complete with a re-brick cotton factory.
A present-day reference point is Failsworth Pole. Daisy Nook is a public park at its southern boundary. Early settlements rested upon a road which runs today between Manchester and Yorkshire. This Roman by-road formed part of the network that ran northwards from Manchester, perhaps as far as Tadcaster, near York. It was built over bog land, on top of scrub wood, and had a solid surface.
Roman roads were also known as “Streets”, a term from the Old High Country meaning “metal roads”, suggesting it was used in this late period too. Early sources indicate the area was occupied during Saxon times. Small villages consisting of scattered houses made from coarse local stones, clay, and daub, and thatched with straw roofs, were probably situated above the surrounding marshland. Daily life would have been centred around livestock husbandry and farming. Not mentioned in Domesday Book of 1086, Failsworth appears as Fayleswrth in a record from 1212, the settlement being recorded as an essastes, or landed property, consisting of four droves of land.
Two oxgangs, at a yearly fee of four shillings, were paid by the tenant, Gilbert de Notton, to Adam de Prestwich, who, in turn, paid tax to King John. The other two oxgangs were held by the Lord of Manchester as part of his freehold. The Byrons came to own all the boroughs by the middle of the 13th century. Apart from the small holding held by the Cockersand abbey, Failsworth passed through the hands of the Chethams, who later sold it off to smaller landowners.
